I love thunderstorms. I'm always amazed when I watch on radar how they dissipate just before reaching here, else break into two halves, with half passing to the North and half passing to the South of where I live. I was also slightly amused when I figured out that on one side of the hill behind me, rain runoff eventually makes its way to the Mississippi river. On this side, it eventually makes it to Lake Ontario.

(But, when the thunderstorms DO hit, I'm actually a little afraid. Frequent cloud to ground lightning; I have a lot of trees on the hill that have been hit; two trees in front of my house have been hit, our neighbor's electric fence has been hit, and 2 trees right behind my barn have been hit. - all in one year.)

I live on a barrier island, water is 2 blocks from my house either way, we are also a private beach - meaning no business's at all (hotels or condos) and you can drink on the beach (not many around here you can anymore) Hurricanes are cool too

I live 1 highway exit away from 1 Infinite Loop. It amazes me when I buy an Apple product and it says Designed by Apple of California or when they list my hometown Cupertino. It's also nice to be able to NOT change the default city for my iPod Touch because... well home sweet home.

Besides that, it's also amazing this is the heart of Silicon Valley. Granted it's a good 10 minute drive away, but I've worked in enough places to be around the top tech companies that make it happen.

On top of that, San Jose is one of the safest large cities in the US. Actually it's like #10 in population but compared to the rest of the top 10, the crime ratio is completely out of proportion because it's quite safe.

People complain about NorCal weather but that's usually because SF is a different world of its own. I can party there at night if I want, hit Santa Cruz beaches if I want, or drive 4 hrs to Tahoe and enjoy some of the best snow in the US (right behind CO).

I live in a place where people move into multi million $ houses to send their kids to the best high schools in the Bay Area. It's filled with Asians like me and for that I can enjoy nice Asian food whenever I go out.

I live in the most culturally advanced place on earth. Sadly that still makes it quite primitive.

PS San Francisco and Bay Area

Love the culture, but it's not my thing. So while it's cool to have it here, there's a reason why SF is still a shithole. It's a fun place to live when you're young, but there's a reason why people settle down in the South Bay.

high condo prices. They say there are more condos than shoppers now in Boston...yet prices are still going up. Are buyers here just stupid?

Name something cool, interesting, or even boring and useless about the town you live in that impresses you.

I'll kick things off... every day I don't know what I may see flying overhead. Some days it's F-16's, some days it's a huge Sikorsky, some days it's a massive commercial cargo jet, some days it's a C-130, some days it's Apache's, some days it's a Kiowa Warrior, and every day it's commercial airliners.

It's fun being in a town with a ton of DoD contractors, an army base, an airport and Boeing, LMCO and Grumman.

This plus Cricket's hot wings, Korea House and The Nook.

my place is just..awesome. brand new building, amazing people, hip bars and restaurants, oversees a park, nyc skyline, built in gym, doorman, parking etc. i dunno i almost feel like bragging about it but i won't because anyone can live there if they choose to pay for it and if they do, they're usually ridiculed by those who won't or can't so it's a pointless thing to mention especially here where almost everyone makes an easy 6 figures and has model girlfriends.

We live in a small town with less than 2k people. It is quiet and safe. We never lock our doors or cars and there really isn't any crime in the area. Even though the town is very small, we have an auto parts store, a hardware store, a grocery, a bowling alley, a couple diners and several other shops that provide just about anything we would need all within less than a 5 minute drive. The people are friendly and the cost of living is very reasonable. There are many farms in the area that provide fresh produce at the farmer's market. Apple orchards, pumpkin patches, and christmas tree farms make the holidays fun.

Chicago, Millwaukee, and Madison are all within a 1.5 hour drive. Rockford IL is the largest city near us at only 35-45 minutes away.

The only down side to living in our area is the cold winters and occasional tornado (we had a warning the other day, a tornado went by our town ~15 miles to the south of us). Other than that I have no complaints and wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Once I get out of my neighborhood I can walk over 40 miles in a straight line before I hit another paved road. Local relief is slightly greater than that of Jackson/Grand Teton. The tortilla section is bigger than the bread section in the local grocery store. There are 193 mountain ranges in my fair state. On a clear day I can see sixty miles from my living room window. If I walk up the hill a bit I can see well over a hundred. Almost every day is a clear day. People really do get depressed if it is cloudy more than two days in a row.

I am impressed at how so many pieces of shit can fill one area. If I am part of it, so be it. My entire neighborhood needs to be cleansed.

We've all been saying that about whichever neighborhood you lived in for years.

We have a couple of acres out in the country and a 120 year old farm house. Absolutely beautiful, quiet, safe, and cheap. 25 minutes to work, Chicago is an hour away, gambling boats on Lake Michigan are 30 minutes away, and our school system is rated #7 in the state.

I do want to move somewhere warmer when I retire in about 5 years.

People come visit Dallas and I take them downtown to see where JFK got shot...X marks the spot. Kind of gruesome. There's things to do but not a whole lot to see.

The good: There's still some open space in my town for hiking/other recreational uses. It's rapidly shrinking because we need moar track houses, but theres still some. And there's a bunch in the surrounding towns so I can get away from people.

The bad: Most of the people my age who live here are vapid, spoiled, and idiotic, which makes them unsuitable for socialization beyond manipulating the females into having sex with me, lulz.

Good:
Cops in this town just got two awards for excellence. One general award that they get every year and is easily obtainable anyway, and one special award that only goes to about 5 departments in the whole state.

Bad:
This town is infested with illegal aliens and they never seem to get kicked out. So either the cops are unable or unwilling to do anything about the only serious problem we have. Obviously the getting and giving of the excellence award is pure political posturing and has more to do with revenue from traffic tickets than real law enforcement.

I love thunderstorms. I'm always amazed when I watch on radar how they dissipate just before reaching here, else break into two halves, with half passing to the North and half passing to the South of where I live.

Install a tin roof and have an array of sharp copper cones installed along the ridge. Bond this roof to the neutral wire in your house.

The worst storms will come right overhead, every time. (or you will be in the paths of the split cells or a receiver of many storm trains.)

Or live on a boat.

Mr. Murphy said so!

The fact that every morning features something different outside. :awe:

I've wondered how that works. Do you stay on the ship even when off duty on vacation or holiday? Do you work 12mos or is there an off season? What about when the ship is in dock for maint?

It varies.. My contract is 9 months but I've been doubling and tripling up. I don't have a house or family ashore so it works OK for me. :awe:
