It's too easy to deceive yourself, especially when you want to believe something. That's why no one takes this sort of thing seriously. Knowledge of your own mortality is the ultimate bummer. Most people can convince themselves of just about anything if it means avoiding that unpleasant truth.Why is it that if you tell people you talk to God, you are considered devoutly religious, but if you tell people God talks to you, you are considered insane?

I'll take a stab at it. People think of themselves as one of the minions, not God incarnate. As such, they figure God to be a being who's concern is the minions in total. Thus he's too busy, too concerned with the overall welfare to be bothered to respond to an individual's entreaties. Thus, you talk to him, don't expect a reply. If you think you hear a reply, you are off your rocker because, well, who really thinks God has the time to give you his intention at any time whatsoever to the extent that he will talk to you.
