Would you still buy the 8800?

That's not possible. 9800 GTX won't come out till at least a year after.

If I was about to bring a 6800GT to its knees at those resolutions in games that have been out for a while, I'm pretty sure you can with a 6600GT.

Then we must be playing different things. The nastiest game I've had to deal with thus far is Battlefield 2, and a few adjustments of a few details to medium kept performance up fine.

But then, maybe my definition of "knees" isn't 85 FPS...

I agree there, my 6600 GT did the same.

FEAR just pissed me off taking my framerate so low though

It was "playable" but I wanted 60+ FPS at 1280x960 @ 4xAA 16xAF

FEAR just plain pissed me off.

I was expecting it to be a decent game, not a parade of cliches, predictability, and lame game concepts designed to allow cheap scares. The Anti-Doom 3. Unfortunately...

I actually found the FEAR demo very cool and fun. Sure the 'scare' parts were a bit obvious, but the atmosphere was excellent (sound cues were very good on 5.1). The (directly ripped from Max Payne) slow-mo mode is an effective gameplay enhancer for your (directly ripped from Halo) generic, uberpowerful suit-wearing (directly ripped from Silent Hill) psychically tormented hero.

I'm looking forward to the game, and I already think it seems much more fun than the 30-minutes of cool, 4 hours of snoozefest repetitiveness Doom3.

Yes, your opinion is all well and good, and you're welcome to it, but you are also wrong.

Keeping the 6800GT until Nvidia releases their card with unified shaders.

Why not wait until they ship boards in round boxes instead?

Seriously- unified shaders offer NOTHING over segmented shader hardware. They are not going to give you a single new effect, they aren't going to unlock a lot of power, and they aren't going to raise the bar to match some new specification(just the programming side needs be transparent). Based on nV's comments if you want unified shaders you may be waiting for '08-'09 timeframe before you upgrade again. Not trying to knock you here, but you waiting to upgrade for an architectural shift that means nothing to you doesn't seem like a good reason IMO.

Arguably Unified Shader pipelines could run slower than segmented ones, as they would require logic to organize the ops going through the core.

Just like Dual Core processors are slightly slower at some things because the two cores need to be coordinated, so would unified shader pipelines bog a bit as different tasks had to be organized in the same pipeline.

I definitely think unified shader is the right direction to go in (it will make coding immensely easier from what I understand), but I agree with Nvidia - now is not the right time to do it.

Keep in mind that you can have segmented shader hardware and have it totally transparent to the developer. Same exact coding interface as unified hardware- in a segmented architecture.

You mean now... FEAR/COD2

I dont plan on buying either of those games and i never said that i had to run everything at max and with FSAA/AF.

All I want is 1024x768, high min fps (>25), with >= 4xAA and 4xAF. That's not a lot to ask, right?

You can't be wrong about an opinion no matter how much you disagree. I loved the game and thought it was well done. Very few FPSs can aviod the "next room is full of badies" part that well do to the nature of gun battle lasting mere seconds. Us FPS players get the short end of a stick usually do to this as our games are some of the quickest played. I thought they did a good job getting you past section before they became to repetative, and I didn't think they use cheap scare tatics. Doom 3 with the "you need eyes behind your back because their is always a secret door or if you get far enough they can teleport behind you trick" I think was the game resorted to cheap scare tactics. A cheap scare tactic is putting a caracter right next to you to attack you, a good scare tatic is putting a caracter that does no damage to you right next to you. How can you be frightened if she never does damage, still startles people, that is a great scare tactic.

I called Pc Power & Cooling to help me figure out which PSU to get for my unique system. The rep was an enthusiest tellin me about his system. He goes on to tell me that PCP&C had given Nvidia some special 1200watt power supplies for testing the NV90 (?) Says the card alone draws 230 watts and runs about 60% faster than a 7800GTX and will retail for just over $1000. This, he claims, will be on the market a week or 2 before xmas. Now I don't know this guy from a can of paint but I do find it hard to believe he'd be blowin that much smoke up my ass. All the same it was an interesting conversation and has me wondering.

( Just ordered a BFG 7800GT OC and PCP&C TurboCool 510 Express)

there will always be something better and faster "just around the corner". it's been that way since 3d gfx came to pc's. i'm sure there's dozens of topics just like this on not only this forum, but others. not sure why we need to start yet another thread posing the same old question....

1200W, 230W GPU, NV90... This guy was blowing smoke up your @ss, my friend.

G70 on 90nm will be out by Xmas most likely. It will not need a 1200W PSU nor should it consume 230W either. But hey, leave it to a PSU guy to pimp an absurdly powerful/expensive PSU .

Exactly. There's no right or wrong in opinions on matters such as games.

I never said that FEAR was the best game ever or anything stupid like that at all. I said that it was fun, better than Doom3 and used some good gameplay ideas (slow mo + quiet/scary parts).

Now that I'm farther in the game (I just rescued the girl and am about the get up onto the roof in the building), I do find it a bit repetitive. Fun, definitely, but kind of repetitive.

Certainly no Far Cry or Halo.
