People swallowing and regurgitating pure BS. Rumors, lies, attacks etc, all because, well, "Red has to beat Green!!!!!" or the other way around. Crazy, when everyone knows that gfx cards will only continue to get better and we'll be able to chose the best among them (within our budgets) for ourselves.

Anyhow, your idea was interesting, I'm just at the point where I don't want to hear another word about "Yeah, but in the future...!" because the fanbois have abused the concept so much it's ruined the fun of goodnatured reality-based geeky speculation. And ATI, to their discredit, have encouraged this. However were positions reversed, can picture Nvidia having done the same thing. "Spread the word, my fanboi minions! Believe that the Savior Chip is coming sooooooon!" Show me the benches, the availability and the price, or STFU

Hehe- no problem- yeah people definetly get worked up over video cards!! It does wear on ya after awhile- I've had some really good laughs in the past few days here though!!:Q

Ok, silliest theory evar.

X1800XT won't be ready in time for system builders to offer their product in pre-built machines in time for xmas. ATI delayed as long as it could, probably LONGER than they should have. Dell is probably the only manufacturer who can pull off selling boxes with the XT to be shipped by mid December -- assuming they can do all the engineering and product purchasing logistics ironed out in 5 weeks. It'll be hard enough for them to offer the XL in that timeframe, IMO.

Besides, the real problem is an uncompetitive low end and mainstream lineup. Bragging rights good, good bang for buck in the 80% coverage range better.

If ATI had an nvidia-killer, they'd have paper launched it already.

ATI has had to deal with the 90nm hurdle that historically has caused some problems (IBM, Intel)

It's rare when a company doesn't have problems with shrinking chipsm it's something all companies have to cope with and dom once it's over, it's over

ATI will have to financially deal with MS over tremendous lost profits if they don't deliver

Um, yeah. What does MS have to do with ATI? I think you need to read up on the terms of the 360 deal, ATI isn't supplying chips to MS, MS has to worry about that.

Look they cant afford to do that, they had another loss in the last Q for 2005.

Sure they can "afford" to do it, but this whole theory makes no sense financially, which is why fanboys don't run these companies.

What if they are holding back something with the 1800XT model hoping Nvidia will bite and release their 7800 Ultra and THEN actually release the 1800XT as a higher clocked and/or more piped part(many doubts on the pipes part of it),to beat the 7800Ultra. Maybe just too much coffee and time on my hands...

It sounds very interesting. You really should start writing thrillers with a lot of CIA agents in them. Anyway, I don't think it's possible. You see it take years to develop such a hardware and there are a lot of people involved. Some info would surely have been leaked to the press.

best we can hope for is that XT is selling for $500 or less in mid-november, and a wee bit of OC headroom
