What in hell's name was DFI thinking when they designed their boxes?

I picked up a DFI NF4-SLI mobo yesterday. Let's just say I got some looks as I was walking out of Fry's... Do they sincerely believe that somebody who isn't really familiar with computers is going to buy a motherboard based on their completely awesome box design? (Of course, somebody who isn't familiar with computers isn't going to buy a motherboard anyway, but they have to be losing business on some level or another...)

i really dont care about the box, and anyone who is affected by the box is an idiot. i like benchmarks, and reviews. and, what the people on this forum say. so, i wouldnt mind if there was a pretty pink unicorn with a smiley sun and a rainbow on the box, if the mobo was really good.

I agree, it looks like they are marketing towards 13 year olds. They really should drop the whole pre-pubescent ?Lanparty? theme as it is rather lame.

It's a stupid looking box, but that's the way most stuff in Taiwan in marketed. I assume they just copied the box design they use for Asian markets when they ship them to the US. Honestly, it can't hurt their sales that much, because most people getting a DFI board know what they're looking for, and most people who don't specifically want a DFI board are going to get something cheaper anyway.

There is some truth to that but marketing has an effect on everyone whether they are conscience of it or not, some more then others.

It's what?s inside the box that counts but I think the point is their marketing department isn't doing them any favors. DFI should take some marketing cues from companies like Asus or AOpen.

haha yeah I agree... DFI's box does look pretty dumb. I hope they don't take any hints from Epox either... My last Epox board just showed this husky looking guys torso.

If/when I move to AMD though that's one of the first brands I'll look at for mobos.

Not only that, but DFI's packaging has had some problems too. My Ultra-D (and several others too) came with the Karajan audio module MASHED onto the top of the mobo...mine was badly damaged as a result. Took forever for DFI to respond to this, so Monarch replaced the mobo for me. I agree tho...the box exterior is juvenile.

Meh i dont mind it, at least its better than some ugly pictures on the boxes of graphics cards.
But i have to say that box stands out, so thats gotta be good i guess.

Also i have to say this board IS THE nicest board i EVER used, i mean come on its almost imposible to make it not post, even when u overclock it too much u can still get into the bios easily, without having to unplug it turn off etc, like what u have to do with the asus one.

my father took and passed calculus when he was 13-14 and i dont think u need to know calculus to build a comp

There are people with PhDs who can't build computers. Intelligence and computer building skill would have extremely low correlation.

agreed, lame box. definitely marketed towards kids who like to have windows in their boxes, and look at all the day-glow colors with cold cathodes etc.

if they didn't have such a bad rep for being extra tricky to get running stable w/ an overclock, i'd have probably have gotten one instead of an asus.

Yeah, the packaging looks really lame. When I first saw it, I was thinking about an image of a guy sitting infront of his old CRT monitor, with a large stack of dirty CD/DVDs near him, him sitting on an old rusty chair, his keyboard being burnt by the countless cigars he had, an ashtray rolled over the table, slime and drool dripping from his mouth and red tired eyes. And him wearing a dirty wifebeater. Now that would be something I'd buy in a instant!
