I thought I was angry....you've got me beat by a long shot. Did you watch Footloose a lot when you were younger and learn to rebel against your parents and the man early on?

Was that supposed to be a coherent response? You went on some random rant... try addressing points...

Italians didn't show up until after the civil war was over. Their immigration mostly picked in the 1900's: http://bancroft.berkeley.edu/collections/italianamericans/timeline_immigration.html

Germans weren't really here until after the civil war. Their immigration picked up 1880 etc.
http://www.loc.gov/rr/european/imde/germchro.html

Irish were here but they were pretty repressed at that time anyway.

Swedish? really:

http://www.augustana.edu/general-information/swenson-center-/swedish-american-immigration-history

Russian? The few that were here before the civil war were in Alaska, owned at that time by Russia.

No Germans during the Civil War ?

http://wesclark.com/jw/foreign_soldiers.html

And I didn't say there were lots of Swedes, Italians, or Russians..but rather the ones that were here were primarily in the North.

To refute your concept that the Civil War was about British (the North) versus "Celts" (the South), whatever you mean by that.

We're all familiar with mercenaries and they have nothing to do with the issue.

The Swedes, Russians and Italians are irrelevant. E.g., Russians were in Alaska which was part of Russia at that time.

I never said that the civil war was "about British (the North) versus "Celts" (the South)". (I edited "British" to correct it England since Britain includes Scotland.) I mention it because it informs how the war started. If it were merely slavery there was no reason to secede because Lincoln had not proposed abolition of slavery, merely that it be limited to the South. Why would a plantation owner in LA or GA worry about New Yorkers' ability to have slaves? He wouldn't.

Well if we're going to sanction going off topic here...

"We denounce those threats of disunion ... as denying the vital principles of a free government, and as an avowal of contemplated treason, which it is the imperative duty of an indignant people sternly to rebuke and forever silence."[83http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Civil_War#cite_note-republican18-83

Republican Party Platform. To call disunion treason, to follow with "duty" to "forever silence". It was a call to war over the audacity of State's Rights and self determination.

The blood was spilled over nationalism.

OP keep your religious/Puritanical views to yourself. Yes you have the right to express them, and you unfortunately have the right to be a bad parent....but we have the right to mock you.

I want to bring some attention to something that is happening right under my own nose... In the city I travel to every day for work.

This relates to the newly adopted Common Core Curriculum. I admittedly know very little about this program but I'm pretty pissed off about what it has ushered in.

Read this and tell me it wouldn't alarm you.
http://freepatriot.org/2013/09/14/common-core-book-kids-describes-entering-behind/

At least my kids aren't going there.

You really ought to read this post about how many very good books are and have been banned because people freaked out about any kind of sexuality or racial tones ect. http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/1lzheu/a_list_of_fantastic_prek12_banned_books_organized/

Meh. That little passage is nothing compared to what kids today could very easily run into with one accidental click on google.
Who cares?

Also, remember what we read in HS. Shakespeare was overflowing with innuendo and dick jokes. We just don't get it because the language has changed so significantly.

Even older stories, like the Odyssey: Odysseus is a man-whore. Spending years on various islands sleeping around, then suddenly remembering that he needs to get home to his wife. And then there is all the phallic symbolism throughout, eg: only Odysseus can shoot the arrow through the axes...

theres alot more wrong with common core, and say ngss then whatever op is made about.

Actually, I'm pretty happy with much of the common core & what it promises to bring. The only thing that I and many of the teachers I know are unhappy about is how it was rolled out.

New generation science standards - that's sort of a middle of the road thing - for many states, it's a huge step up. But for some, it's a step backward. I recommended that we don't adopt the NGSS in NY.

My point is you really need to get laid or rub one out; whatever makes you lighten up Francis. Was that taught when you were in school? How about entering a women from behind? Is that the role of the school to instruct as well?

Lighten up Francis.....

So that book wasn't on the recommended list until grade 11-CCR so most people reading it would be even older than the class in question.

I see a lot of books on that list that include murder (pretty extensively I might add), war, starvation, in depth descriptions of killing someone by burying them alive in a crypt to get revenge and how they got away with it, alcoholism, child abuse but everyone gets up in arms about a couple of lines describing sex? Seems about right...

And what? No anti-sex love for the Odessey? Come on - the guy was Calypso's sex slave for like 8 years. Even worse - he was married to someone else! Every other female character he encountered wanted to\tried to entrap him with sex

I am all for the "idea" that common core has. trouble is i don't like how they are going about it.

Il has schools useing approved books. i hate that. the math is something new. none of the teachers like it.
My kids school was stuck in the 50's. they did a lot of work. they ahd to memorize the multiplication table etc.

The kids always scored great. hell my daughter scored 96% in state and 90% in nation for math, science, reading.

now i do worry about it. they are working on division and multiplication of fractions. BUT they aren't to do the problem to get the answer they are to just guesstimate. the correct answer is not the right one.
