We may not have done it first, but we did it right! Don't make me go full ebonics on you, Syrup head.

EDIT: Just found out that Canada ranks just below the US in the IQ averages. :hmm:

It has nothing to do with Americans, I know in any country people couldn't answer it either. Ask this in Africa and they won't even know what electricity is.

A lot of people don't know because they don't need to know. As much as IE sucks and doesn't work, it generally does work. The biggest reason I stopped using it is because the back button doesn't work in it. If you post something and it doesn't post for some reason, hitting back goes back to a blank text box. In Firefox, Opera, Chrome, hitting back goes back to your entire post in the text box and nothing is lost.

I'll bet the vast majority of people on this website couldn't correctly define "browser". Go on, prove yourselves.
Thing that lets you look at websites.
I wanted to say it's what lets you look at porn, but utorrent does that too

for curiosity I typed it into wordweb. Wordweb's definition:
1 - A viewer who looks around casually without seeking anything in particular
2 - A program used to view web pages on the internet

A modern browser is much more than that though. That's only a partial definition.
The web is lot more interactive these days. One could probably say a browser is to interact with web pages.

I'll also add that browsers are used to print images because the windows picture viewer is a piece of shit and tries to install a printer when I tell it to print on the default printer. Opera and Firefox can print that same png image without a problem.

But it does much more than that. My browsers can view SVG files, navigate XML. And of course there's no requirement that I'm even connected to the web to use a browser. Keep trying.

I think I would have had trouble giving a simple, concise answer because there is quite a bit web browsers do.

But simply, I would say:

Web browser: Software used to access information on the internet.
Search engine: Website used to search for information on the internet.

All of those things are not necessary for something to be called a browser. The browser on my phone doesn't do nearly as much as a modern browser on a PC but it still can browse full normal webpages. Because it can open and view normal webpages it still counts as a browser.

Similarly, modern operating systems include things to play audio and video, edit text files, and tons of other things. None of those are required for something to be considered an OS, they just happen to be features included with the OS in addition to its basic functions.
