I think that's a good, technology-agnostic definition TruePaige. I don't see a problem with retaining a dependency on HTTP in the definition (URI) because it's essentially the bedrock of the web. HTML isn't. Already we consume a ton of non-HTML content through XML, JSON and unstructured data, not to mention video and audio content, and this is delivered with non-HTML methods such as Javascript, Flash and Silverlight. Predicating the definition of a browser on HTML is silly and arbitrary.

Thanks, thats what I hoped it would come across as.

HTML is like the ICE of a car. Sure, it is still the mainstay but innovative new technologies are surplanting the classical way in which that has been defining an automobile. But the URI is more of a basic "propulsion device is used and connected in a drivetrain with other components" part of the analogy.

My browser is a constant tool for administrative purposes not related to the world wide web or (in a few cases) based on HTML.

It's actually worse than this clip. I deal with these people every day at our call center. We're trained to say "open a web browser---like Internet Explorer of Firefox".

- Most people seem to call Firefox: Foxfire
- I had someone the other day call it "Internet Explosion"
- Most people think that you can only check email through the service you're connected to. This is why AOL still has so many open accounts: they think you have to connect to AOL to check their email there.
- If you ask "Do you get your mail through a website or through an email program", the standard response is "I get it through you guys."

I could go on for hours. If a computer is so important to everything you do, take 30 minutes and learn a few basic concepts for God's sake.

I still refuse to learn what gasoline is or how to connect a TV to a VCR/DVD/Xbox/NES/PVR even though I use these every day of my life

You don't need to know what gas is to use your car. You DO need to know what a gear shift is, turn signals, brakes, and a gas pedal is, and have a general idea of what they do when you use them however.

What makes you think I use turn signals?

You don't need to know what a gear shift is. All I need to know is, "P means park. R means reverse. D means DOOMSDAY!"

If you drive a Toyota like I do, P means please carjack me. It automatically unlocks the doors so you get stabbed by brown people after you've stopped at Walmart and are looking for something that fell under your seat.
