Whenever you buy a plasma tv, does the brand matter much in terms of reliability?
Best buy has a lot of samsungs and LG's, toshiba, sony, but they also have other less expensive brands like panasonic and some other names.

If you go to walmart, you see Sanyo, iLo, vizio, which are very affordable compared to the big names.

From you guy's experience, is it better off to get an expensive TV? or will the other brands do as good?

What is a good and trustworthy brand?

VERY much so. Panasonic is known to make some of the best glass in the industry - that's primarily why you see them talked about the most and priced a little bit higher.

Generallly, the no name brands like Vizio are using glass/electronics made by other companies. They did have a 50" last year that used Panasonic glass/electronics. I'm not sure about now.

LG and Samsung looked like crap compaired to the Panasonic I ended up purchasing. I've never looked at Sanyo or Sony plasma. I wouldn't purchase sony for the world though. Yuck.

What about Philips and Pioneer?

What about Philips and Pioneer?

Pioneer Elite series is supposed to be one of the best. I'm not sure on their standard consumer line.

Not sure about Philips either. I have a 30" HDTV tube from them in my bedroom and it's awesome, but Plasma could go either way - so I can't comment on it.

Best place to start is AVSForum.com and ask around. Good people with a lot of knowledge on the subject. Check out the plasma TV section

Panasonic and Pioneer are about tied. A few pros and cons to each of them.

Panasonic better blacks then Pioneer
Pioneer better brightness

This is of course if your being VERY critical.

Fujitsu are the best but you pay a lot more for a tiny fraction better then Panasonic or Pioneer.

Sony upper end plasma screens are 'good' but not worth the £££ when compared to the Panasonics or Pioneer screens.

LG and Samsung screens can look good depending on which ones you have. They are a lot less in many situations.

Koing,

Well put.

Generally with most displays (plasmas especially) going cheap isn't a good idea.

I've always like AQUOS LCD's......The price....I didn't like. I jumped on the SCEPTRE 42" LCD at Costco....Since it was my first tv I was all excited about it. After the months have worn on, there's thing that I DON'T LIKE about it. The remote isn't level. If you put it on a flat surface it can rock back and forth. The menu screens are HORRIBLE. Trying to set up HTSC and ASTC is crap....you have to have the channel set to a certain channel to play with sound and cinema settings. (HAD TO CALL TECH SUPPPORT TO FIND THAT OUT) PiP is useless.....And the price has dropped $600 bucks since I bought it!!! I think I'm going to take advantage of COSTCO's 100% guarantee and return it for a 45" 50" Plasma/LCD.......

BTW If Samsung's are "CRAP" Why would they be showing off the Xbox 360's using their LCD's? (Oh, the "crap" manufacture just released a 19" LCD monitor with a ONE MILLISECOND response time...)

Samsungs and Sonys are identical, I believe Sony actually gets their components from Samsung.

we have a pioneer, and that thing gets hot to the point you can feel the heat radiating if you hold your hand above the back of the tv. However i guess all of them are like that.

We had the pioneer for about 6 months now. No complaints.

afaik, Sony doesnt make plasma anymore, I had a samsung, had it for about a week, returned it due to buzzing noise, got a panasonic now. the samsung had a sharper image than the panasonic, but panasonic has better shadow details, pioneer is just overpriced.
