SCSI is just a different standard for devices like hard drives and CD-ROMs. Pin configuration is different than for IDE. SCSI devices are assigned an ID# (0-7) by the SCSI controller. You can think of SCSI as almost like a 'network' of devices inside your computer, since SCSI devices are 'chained' together.

Maxtor does make that exact drive in SCSI so it is possible that he is right. Open his case and see if it is hooked up to his IDE cables or a SCSI card.

80Gb would be an unusual size for a SCSI drive, and typical prices for 73Gb SCSI drives are way up there, like $400+.

Typical RPMs on SCSI drives are 7200rpm, 10000rpm and 15000rpm. If the drive is not on the motherboard's native IDE controller, but rather on an add-on controller, Windows will regard its controller, and possibly the drive itself, as a SCSI device, so that could be where he's getting the idea.

Good point mechBgon, I didn't even think about the size . 80 gig would most likey be a IDE drive.

Hehe, and I'm sure the guy would remember if he paid $400+ for it too!

The ATA controller is only SEEN as SCSI, to help the bios differentiate between the standard IDE controller and the ATA controller for determination of which to give boot priority. The ATA controller is not SCSI at all. The bios is merely being "fooled" to see a different type controller. Similar to creating a raid array that the bios is "fooled" into seeing a single drive.

One way to prove it's not a SCSI drive is to count the number of pins on the data interface. If it has 40-pins, it's not SCSI. SCSI drives have 50, 68, and 80 pins.
