MCSE = Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer

I have that certification, and my title at work is

So am I an engineer? Is my education level even relevant?

I have the same certification, and I don't think it qualifies me to be called an "engineer." However, I also have a BSEE and nearly an MSEE. So yes, I am an engineer.

I can concede that. I think law should be similar to that, or medicine, rather than the current system. Either have an entry level exam that qualifies you to be an apprentice, or require some sort of residency for a few years. Then a full law license. I think the British do it that way.

Problem is, the ABA makes a lot of money accrediting so many schools that there are basically more law grads than viable positions.

Engineers apply the principles of science and mathematics to develop economical solutions to technical problems. Their work is the link between scientific discoveries and the commercial applications that meet societal and consumer needs.

The list does not include Comp Sci, Computer Hardware counts though.

...

phail...

software engineers turn algorithms discovered by comp sci/mathematicians and turn them into real world software.

To be able to take the PE, you need 4 years of experience working as an EIT under a PE. Also, you'll need the endorsements of 3 or 4 other PE's.

dictionary.com disagrees. Check #4.

I was only making a joke in my first post. Then saw you got all snooty with everyone.

k. whatever, i still have a BSEE and can get a job wherever i want. so i have some advantage.

That is completely irrelevant information. This discussion isn't about your ability to find a job, it's about the legitimacy of people calling themselves "engineers".

You're just being childish, sort of like the kid that likes to horde all the toys. "No, that title's MINE, you can't use it!!!"

yes, the title is mine, because i suffered through classes like electromagnetics and statics and advanced engineering calculus. the others didn't.

You dont know the meaning of suffering. Sitting in an air conditioned class, at a major university, with hot chicks all around, is not the meaning of suffering. I can give you several examples that are far worse, and still doing engineer work.

Quick, give me the amount and type of explosive to blow up 27 AK's, three AT mines, 7 bags of fertilizer, 12 RPG's, 5 pressure plates, 14 mortars, and 8 155's. Oh, and dont forget to give me the standoff for both covered and uncovered. Also how to place the charges. Dont forget to take into account the det cord, and blasting caps.

You see, there are many different types of engineers. There are your type, and several others. We have to do construction too. Know how to build pretty much anything, with all types of material. Design, and build. We get to build stuff, and blow stuff up.

You have a PC, pen, paper, some rulers, maybe even an eraser on the rare occasion that you make a mistake. I have other equipment.

http://i29.tinypic.com/2zoyo86.jpg

Mine detector, mine probes, E-tool, weapon, flak jacket, etc... I may not have a PE, but have to wear full PPE.

I cant do your job, and you cant do mine. Certainly not physically. Get over yourself, and your self righteous attitude.

who gives a flying fuck how much stuff you know? there are plenty of people who know a lot of stuff and they aren't engineers.

I agree. That post was ridiculous.

All of the things listed in that post are either memorized or answered with a 4 function calculator. None of that has anything to do with what engineering is about.

Quick, what is the B-E voltage drop of a forward biased NPN transistor. You know the answer? Well you must be an engineer then. Oh, you mean you can memorize stuff like that?

The reason I ask is because some people at work call themselves network engineers but none of them went to a four year university for engineering or even have CCNAs.

Do you get bothered when non-engineers use the title "xxx engineer"?

What about computer scientists who called themselves engineers?

Don't worry, alot of those "network engineers" when tryign to get a good job don't get far. A guy I know from another large company (power plants) basically said if there was no engineering degree, the resume was basically garbage.

Which is how it should be. Doctors go to med school, lawyers go to law school, engineers go to engineering school, etc. Seems to be a pattern...

In CA, you can get take the EIT (and be on track for a PE) without having an Engineering degree. You just need 6 years of experience =)

Are we talking about professional engineers or just engineers. To me, you aren't a professional unless you have a degree, you can still be considered an engineer and do engineer related work without one, but you aren't a professional in my book.

Reminds me of my first day at my internship. Company is primarily focused on R&D for the Air Force (mostly space-related projects, e.g., satellites). The VP showed a distribution of the degrees at the company, and it was something like 25 % Bachelors, 50 % Masters, and 25 % Ph.D.s, with a sliver (< 1 %) having no degree. The VP mentioned it, saying that we might be surprised that we'd have some people at the company without a degree. He said that some of those people were the kind of guys that have been working on aerospace projects for the past 30 years, who've been around from the beginning, but just never got a degree. They could go toe-to-toe with any of the most highly educated individuals coming out of graduate school based purely on their experience.

Anyway, to me, engineering has nothing to do with education or degrees (and this is coming from someone who is going through graduate school right now). An engineer is someone that can apply their knowledge and skills (or acquire new ones) to solve technical problems. That includes a ton of people, but let me tell you many individuals with engineering degrees are excluded from that group. As much as engineers wear their degrees as a badge of pride (as can be seen from this thread), I'm sure we all know many, many people who were extremely incompetent who also made passing grades in all the courses we took.
