Set a budget for your self and that is the best deal for you.

But keep this in mind NEVER buy a low end MoBo I personaly always go highend with a MoBo and midrange with a CPU.

Also going 64bit is a total waste of money unless you are planning on running a 64bit version of Linux even with a 64 bit version of Windows 32 bit apps ran on a 64 bit platform emulated too 32bit run slower then on a true 32bit rig so long story short buy a Prescott and a Asus P4C800 deluxe and call it a day.

Oh almost forgot even when XP 64 is finaly released it will be at least 2 years untill the majority of software companies start releasing software with 64bit extensions and another year to two years before XP 64 is stable and some what bug free.

If you are determined to go 64bit I would consider a Apple G5 I recently bought one and I love it it's the best PC I have owned in years factory liquid cooling 4 gig of ram ATI 9800xt yummm

You can get the A64 2800+ and the ABit K8V with a free copy of Farcry for 200 bucks total. Not the greatest mobo for overclocking but the price is excelent.

Take a look at the specail deals and read some reviews.

There are many inexpensive mobos that are quite good quality, and some expensive ones that suck. Low-end is relative.

Abit and A64 2800+ is $198 and doesn't come with FarCry. If you want the FarCry combo you have to get the Chaintech and A64 2800+ for $223. I rather get the Abit combo and skip the hassle of selling FarCry.

I personally like the 3200 newcastle at 2.2 gig and an Chaintech VNF-250. that 3200 will perform almost identical to the 3400 and will prolly overclock to 2.5 which will rock.

3000+. Almost the same performance as the 3200+, but much cheaper. The 2800+ is cheaper, but probably wont give u the power ur looking for for the money. Also ull often find it not much less. ($20) compared to $50 diff between the 3000+ and 3200+. And obviously above the 3200+ is the 3400+ which is even more and percentage wise isnt worth it in comparison to the 3000+

Not to flame/thread crap/or anything but...

First, punctuations please.

Second, sorry to tell you but 32 bit software actually run faster on an AMD64.

if you wanna overclock at all, do NOT get a via chipset unless its a pro. I got the asus k8v SE deluxe.. i was lucky enough to get 350 mhz out of it. I wanted to get 500+ so im actually buying a new board.I think im gonna get the MSI k8n neo board, or the epox

As was stated, it is not a waste of money to get a 64bit chip. I have 3200+ Athlon XP. My roommate got a new computer with an Athlon 64 2800+ and it is faster than my computer. It is definitly worth getting the Athlon 64.

hehe if youve read any of the winxp64 articles the games ran anywhere from 10 - 50% slower on a 64bit OS, you can chalk it up to drivers but basically I wouldnt let teh 64bit feature make your decision.

I agree. I don;t know that mobo for sure, but the CPU for sure, and if that is a good quality mobo and OC's well, then definitely go that way.

And yes, Athlon64's in 32 bit mode and 32 bit apps are still faster AND run cooler than Athlon XP's. I have both (actually several of the XP's)

I just got my Abit KV8 and 2800+, ran C&C Generals on it with WinXP64, seemed to run faster than it does with WinXP standard.

Microsoft has stated that apps generally get a 10% boost from running on a 64-bit OS. Games should not be any different once drivers are finalized.

apple has to use liquid cooling for a 2.5ghz g5. That is not good. Also you are looking at a more than $4000 computer that would about be comparable to last years stuff. (not to mention no upgrade route)

My PURELY VIDEO benchmarks are a little slower, due to BETA drivers in my xp64 build for the ATI card. Other things seem to run faster.
