they're just 2 different formats... DVD-R/W seems to be more common though... thus the media seems to be a little bit cheaper than DVD+R/W

Everytime I go into Best Buy, they never have DVD-R media or they are out of the ones that are cheap. :|

true ..

but how many people with dvd burners spread their discs around?
what are the major uses for the burners? movies, data, archiving?
are they for standalone dvd players?

1. wouldn't spread my discs around, essentially it doesnt matter which format it's in
2. i prolly would make dvd movies cause i have a tv out for my video card. But even if i did, recent dvd players play both +/-Rs. My biggest use would be archiving data and the format doesn't matter cause it will get read by the burner it made it with.
3. again, new standalone players can read both formats.

Get a ±R/±RW drive, then you can use both types of media, so you should be able to make discs that can be read on any player, and you'll be able to buy whichever media is cheapest. There are a couple of ±R/RW drives around, one made by Sony and the other by Plextor(?), so check them out.

I would ask though, do you NEED a DVD burner at all? You could wait for them to drop in price if you have no real need at the moment (you don't make home movies etc).

From the comparisons I've seen, "DVD-R" is the most compatable with DVD players old & new.

I've heard that "-" seem to be more compatible but often glitch more often in a "compatible" player.

On the other hand, if a "+" disc plays, it generally plays glitch free.

This is very informal info I've read at various forums. I decided to go with "+" for that reason and have been quite happy with it.

Hmmm thanks for all the replies that I need to know. I m still having a hard time to decide which one or is it worth to buy one? I almost buy dvd+r/rw this morning but back off and give it more time to research before I regert. I ve heard that dvd-r/rr has more postive on rewrite but who cares about rewrite since dvd + r/rw can rewrite too...

I ve asked the saleman, he said the format is both same, just the DVD drive (disc) are more cheaper than dvd-R/rw disc. He even showed me to compare the price on it.

Now which brand of dvd burner is reasonable price to buy. I dont want the top or the best ones but I need it run very good at reasonable price. I know they re expesnive... Between 100 to 200 would be reasonable price... .

Thank u again...

+RW can format in the background, with -RW you have to wait.
+RW can be written to an unlimited number of times, -RW only 1000times.

playstation 2 plays DVD -R very well, media is very cheap and I really see no reason to burn a -RW more that 1000 times, lol. Plus I own a drive with the - Formatt what else is there to say?

Woofyjr-

I thought I was going to buy a dual format drive but then I realized I could spend $175 for a single format and if need to switch over later I still probably wouldn't spend more than the $350 going rate for the Sony dual format. (and I'd get a newer, faster drive if I updated)

What I've read indicates that the +RW format is more robust than the -RW so you might want to check that out if you care. In my case that was the deciding factor since I was going to use it for random-access data storage. I was tempted to wait for the 4X RW speeds just around the corner, but I want a drive now and I can't justify the price difference.

Good luck

Optorite DD0203 is a dual format DVD burner with 8mb cache and also has Sanyo HD Burn technology for about $290.
