Basically, "emo" is a lifestyle that is travelling down the same road that hardcore/punk travelled down after MTV and the big record companies decided they wanted to make money off of it. They turned it from being something that the rebellious kids could enjoy and relate to into something that is "trendy". Like punk, there will be the classic emo kids for many years to come, but there will also be many other kids who follow the trendy path. Thus, a new definition for "emo" has been created in addition to the old one even though the two of them are very different from each other.
