Hi everyone, a little background on me and my situation:
I'm currently the network admin for my fraternity at Purdue University. We are using Linksys RV042 router with a pair of Netgear Managed Switches for about 40-50 computers.
Lately there have been several issues with the internet slowing to an absolute crawl and when I try to access the router it just times out. After a minute or two everything goes back to normal and I can access the router. The router has an uptime display that does not reset itself unless i restart it in the configuration page. During this 2 or 3 minute downtime the pair of switches are accessible. My initial thought was that the router might have been overheating and/or possibly not handling any load that was being presented to it. This is a fraternity so it's not uncommon for there to be some rampant downloading but usually it never causes the router to completely blank out and according the switches there is no record of any large bandwidth to any particular room when it occurs. This makes it seem completely random.
The new problem that has cropped up is that people are getting "Limited to no-connectivity" errors and when trying to "repair" in the Network Connections tab the repair action will get stuck on "Cannot aquire IP address". I have the router set to DHCP enabled and it typically distributes IP's on a 1440 minute lease time. I have no idea if this information is helpful.
This is now happening to my own computer which has a dual NIC. One one port it cannot obtain an IP on the other the internet is running perfectly fine. My computer is hooked up to a personal switch along with my xbox360. The xbox is connecting fine to the Xbox Live service.
I cannot tell if this problem is related to the router, the switches, or if it has something to do with my configuration (which seems unlikely considering this problem just started and how others are experiencing the same thing).
Anyone have any solutions to this problem or any ideas please let me know. This is making my life hell right now and it's causing problems for people who need the internet for school related material. Thanks alot A&T community!
