All the reviews out today are for LCD or 19? or smaller CRTs. I am looking for quality 21? CRT, for a person on a budget.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have a ViewSonic A90f+ and am very happy with it. It's kept me from shelling out more $ for an LCD.

If you live in a large metro area, you might be able to find a used Sony OEM Sun or SGI (Silicon Graphics) monitor for a few dollars. The GDM-20E20 / GDM-20E21 is an awesome Trinitron monitor. The GDM-4011P is similar. The GDM-5011P and GDM-5010P are newer and slightly better. If you want a perfectly flat FD-Trinitron tube, the GDM-5410 and GDM-5411 are excellent!

If you're interested in cosmetics, the 20E21, 4011P, and 5011P are in Silicon Graphics grey "fleck stone" granite finish. 5411 is in "sgi" black. The 20E20, 5010P, and 5410 are in Sun Gray/Blue.

These are all great choices if you can find one locally. These were top-shelf $750 - $1500 monitors in their day. Shipping is expensive and the models you'll find on ebay are usually in rough condition. Also beware of really old Sun and SGI monitors. Some of the oldies are fixed frequency and/or only have BNC or 13w3 connectors. All of the models I've listed feature at least one VGA port and work great all the way up to 2048 resolution. I've had great luck at local auctions and swapmeets. I've never spent more than $100 for a monitor, and my 5411 rivals the $800 LaCie CRT my friend uses.

I'm looking for a 21" LCD as well, and everything I've seen points to getting either the 2001FP or 2005FP (widescreen) from Dell. Anand seems to agress as well.

As far as I can tell the 21" LCDs can more than compete with a 21" CRT and are almost as cheep.
A 2001FP or 2005FP can be had for ~$600!

All the 21-22 CRT have been on the market unchanged for a while. Dig a bit deeper on Google and you will find plenty of reviews. Think 2002-2003.

Any monitor with a Sony FDTrinitron or NEC/Mitsu DiamontronNF would be among the best. Did you want a new model or a used/refurbished one?

I had to make room for my monitors! I bought two "library tables" from Goodwill for $35 each. They're nice big wooden desks (the type you see with those green lamps in libraries in the movies). I have the tables about a foot away from my wall, so my monitors can hang over the back, giving me enough room for keyboards, mice, books, etc on my desktop. You're right... a 19" CRT takes up a lot of room on a modern "computer desk".

I would buy a used monitor from a local shop if I could find one in the Chicago area. Other then that I am stuck buying new.

THanks for the bit of suggestions on what used model numbers to look for.

Well, there are online retailers that specialize in selling refurbished monitors, but it's a hit or miss.
