WRONG! I'm taking Graphic Design right now in HS. It's more of a client type thing, you are the designer. You have to create projects, which could involve computer design but is NOT limited to it.

Those who thinks it's just "draw stuff on a computer" most likely are not successful graphic designers. Computer is just one tool. Graphic design requires a lot of creativity and artistry. Visual spacial, color management, and presentation skills are a must. Those who start in the field get paid cr@p for their hard work. One should not go into Graphic Design unless he/she loves his/her work. Reputable GD, though, earn mucho dinero.

Graphic design is intelligence made visible - it's a way of visual problem solving. I'll leave it at that, but anyone who says it's doing stuff on the computer in photoshop to make pretty things doesn't know what they're talking about.

Pretty much accurate. Don't forget dealing with extremely high-stress situations. Hard deadlines, psycho art directors, etc. You will always have issues with your printing company, and when your catalog (etc.)just gotta be out by a certain date = tremendous headaches + crazy long hours. Not a walk in the park, but if you can deal with stuff like that, it can be rewarding. However, be warned, it will not be easy to express your creativity too much when you are starting out. Your work will generally have to conform to the art director's ideas. This can get extremely frustrating and many new graphic designers just give up on it.

My brother is majoring in it, commercial design specifically I belive. As people have said, it's about designing an image or look for a client for a product, web page, advertisement, whatever. Basically conveying some message to people regarding what your client is trying to sell or make known.

Why are forced to take graphics design as a major?

I had a friend who worked in graphics design for almost 10 years now and most of what he's done is design stationary, business cards, etc for a bank (he works for the bank as their graphics artist.) I think his range of work is likely limited though since he only handles the bank's needs.

It does seem like something you have to really be into. This guy hates it, but he sticks with it since it's steady work. They also pay him very little. (last I heard it was about 30K a year) I think if you have any other options, you should go for them. If you don't know what graphics design is majoring in it could be something you'd really regret.
