ram:

motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128501

cpu:
2500k

i have 4 x 4gb installed. i know that makes overclocking a little harder, but i thought i still should get one speed bump from overclocking the ram (ex: 1600 running @ 1866)

i have taken the dram voltage up to 1.640 - the computer would not get past post.

i am wondering if i need to bump up the VTT to 1.2 to get my ram to overclock (currently the VTT is running @ 1.044)

here are my bios settings so far:
advanced cpu core features
internal cpu pll overvoltage auto
real-time ratio changes in os disabled
intel turbo boost tech disabled
turbo ratio (1-core) auto
turbo ratio (2-core) auto
turbo ratio (3-core) auto

Might be your RAM. Some RAM OCs decently, while others will barely/not post at all just over the rated speed. If you have to push a lot of volts into it, and it's still not stable, it may not be meant to be.

Edit: Did you loosen the timings on the RAM before attempting to up the speed?

Yes, its timings and frequency issue. When you OC the cpu, the RAM increases too, so you have to manually enter 1600Mhz or below , do that and let us know of problems.. gl

Also try running memtest and see if you get any errors, if so, you will have to RMA that.

For one time go to BIOS and set all to SPD and defaults voltage everything. Sorta start from scratch. If it works fine then you dont have busted mobo or RAM. Now OC one thing at a time. When you higher the mutli your RAM frequency also goes up,, Im afraid that is 1600 might be 1700 by your OC for example. let us know, gl

i was thinking of upping the VTT first, and then loosening the CAS last.
if those 2 things don't let me OC my ram to 1866, then i wont bother.

BTW - i am not a noob to o/c'ing. been doing it since 486's

i am just new to the I5 cpu's and mobos

to the "tweakboy" poster. i cant run memtest when i cant even get past post. lol.

someone correct me if I am wrong but i swore we weren't suppose to go over 1.5-1.55v on the ram for a SB system or severely risk damaging the IMC

I didn't say you were a noob...you just didn't explicity say if the timings were changed or not.

Anyway, some RAM can be very troublesome on the 'auto' setting for speeds, based on the MB. On my old X58 rig, the RAM only ran correctly at stock speeds AND voltage with anything on auto. It was a royal pain getting the manual settings correct, but in the end I had a decent memory OC.

Sounds like you have touchy RAM on that board; I would suggest making micro-changes and testing each RAM config change on it's own. My own personal opinion is that the time required to get the OC stable (if possible) is probably not worth-it in your case. If you want a challenge, though, go for it.

GL OP!

run the timings manually at 10-10-10 2t and see if its posts, dont expect the memorry controller to run tight timings with 4 slots full and from my own testing gigabyte boards suck for oc and using 4 sticks of ram
