What is Idaho like? (culturally, politically, economically) ?

One of my family members is thinking of moving out to Idaho. We don't think he will be coming back much, but we hope to still keep in touch. Considering I have never been within 1500 miles of the place, can you tell me what it is like?

Depends on the area. Boise is a bit more libral than the rest from what I hear. But generally it's a super libertarian place

Conservative politically. The rest depends entirely where you are. A drive through Idaho proves it to be flat dirt shithole, yet there are areas like Sun Valley that hide themselves there which are quite nice.

What part of Idaho?
There's a vast difference in the different parts of the state.

Southern Potatoland is heavily Mormon and very ag-oriented, Northern Potatoland is kind of "red-neck," and for many, many years, logging and mining were about the only industries there... but the state is still at the top of the list of our favorite places where we've lived.
We've called Salmon, Challis, Clayton, and Chubbuck "home" at one time or another, and since we both are from Spokane, Northern Potatoland was our playground.

It gets too cold there for us nowadays, but if you're an outdoors type, the hunting and fishing is top-notch, there's good skiing in the winter, lots of forests for camping, and you're close to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. (of course, depending on what part of the state...YMMV)

It IS a pretty conservative part of the country politially, and economically, right now, they're hurting just like the rest of the country.

Socially...well, like most parts of the Rockies, it's gonna depend on exactly where you're at, but Boise, Idaho Falls, and Pocatello are the three largest cities (I think) in the state, and none of them is very big. That's gonna limit the types of social activities, but you've got all the great outdoors to play in...

May or may not be a bad thing...depending on YOUR religious views.
Wouldn't work for me...don't like the Mormon Church, but that's a different thread.

Rexburg is very close to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, Jackson Hole, Wy, and some of the finest trout fishing in the West.
There's a branch of BYU in Rexburg. I don't know if BYU is still limited to Mormons or not. IIRC, it used to be.

I don't think you have to be LDS to attend, but there is a strict honor code adhering to many of the teachings.

I just read the honor code. MOTHER FUCK. Glad it isn't me who is going into that shithole.

Anti-human is what I would call it. Did those people get the memo about the Middle Ages being over?

I was in Idaho once, many moons ago. Idaho was different from the other states. It's subtle, but after about a week most visitors begin to notice that something is not quite right. Usually people from the larger metropolitan areas notice the oddities first. Rural folks less so. I really shouldn't talk about what I saw there. It's quite disturbing to the uninitiated, and, quite frankly, I don't think the world is ready for what I saw there.

Living in Missoula, MT and growing up in Helena, MT which are just to the west, i'm curious to know how different it could possibly be.

Coeur d'Alene is in the opposite corner of the state from Rexburg, ID. North Idaho is all I know and supposedly a it is bit different than the rest of the state.

Aryan Nations

From the 70's until 2001 the Aryan Nations had a 20 acre compound in Hayden Lake, Idaho about 7 miles north of Coeur d'Alene. I don't think that many people ever lived there, but they held an annual World Congress of Aryan Nations at that site. When the Nations leader Richard Butler died in 2004 there were reported to be only about 200 Aryan Nations members total scattered around the country.

This shouldn't be confused with the Aryan Nations prison gang which claims about 15,000+ members and is active in the Federal Prison System, California, Texas, Ohio and Arizona. There is no KKK presence in the area either.

The thing is that Hayden Lake only had 494 residents total as of the census in 2000. So a few dozen Aryan Nations members living there in a 20 acre compound stuck out like a sore thumb. Drop a similar number of racists into Southern California (where I am from) and they wouldn't even be a blip on the map. Today the compound property is owned by the North Idaho College. It was burned to the ground in firefighter training exercises and is now a designated Peace Park.

I lived most of my life in Southern California before moving to the 'burbs north of San Francisco for four years. Then last summer we moved near Coeur d'Alene, where I now work. The North Idaho area is probably 95% white, but I don't see any of the overt signs of the white supremest culture like I used to in California. I haven't seen a single swastika or iron cross tattoo yet, but it was very common for white boys to sport them where I grew up. In fact, the hippy culture is alive and well up here, lol!

Most folks in North Idaho are friendly once you get to know them. There is a strong live and let live libertarian attitude up here, with most people doing what they can to stay out of your business and respect your privacy. The influx of Californians has caused some hard feeling, caused mostly by people thinking they can bring their extremely liberal California policies and culture with them.
