What part of Idaho?
There's a vast difference in the different parts of the state.
Southern Potatoland is heavily Mormon and very ag-oriented, Northern Potatoland is kind of "red-neck," and for many, many years, logging and mining were about the only industries there... but the state is still at the top of the list of our favorite places where we've lived.
We've called Salmon, Challis, Clayton, and Chubbuck "home" at one time or another, and since we both are from Spokane, Northern Potatoland was our playground.
It gets too cold there for us nowadays, but if you're an outdoors type, the hunting and fishing is top-notch, there's good skiing in the winter, lots of forests for camping, and you're close to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. (of course, depending on what part of the state...YMMV)
It IS a pretty conservative part of the country politially, and economically, right now, they're hurting just like the rest of the country.
Socially...well, like most parts of the Rockies, it's gonna depend on exactly where you're at, but Boise, Idaho Falls, and Pocatello are the three largest cities (I think) in the state, and none of them is very big. That's gonna limit the types of social activities, but you've got all the great outdoors to play in...
