are chess-playing computers intelligent? dolphins? other animals? other AI computer programs? The computer in your "smart" rice cooker?

what makes something intelligent and what makes it not intelligent?

help me out on my linguistics hw.

actually the class is Linguistics 105: Categories. it's studying how we categorize things. it's cross-listed with Cognitive Science 101 ... so you see how its sort of philosophical or whatnot

Intelligence is being able to wipe your ass with out getting poop on your hand.

People who pretend to be intelligent are quite often not and I recommend you not shake hands with them.

I heard stories from my dad (i.e. probably exaggerated or maybe has no basis at all) about Korean peasants who would hold "fart" contest. Apparently they competed one another by lighting their fart on fire. According to my dad, it works especially well after eating a good portion of cooked barley.

Now, to give a physics answer to the burning of the orifice, it's probably safe. There is not enough oxygen "inside" to carry on the combustion. Same concept as taking in a burning shot of sambuca, I suppose.

have you ever tried burning the lint off of a sock? now that's cool. doesn't involve any risk of pain ... during ... and in the weeks following.

That's weird.

I personally don't like categories, although I think that my brain works by categorizing things.

Personally, I categorize true intelligence as a mix of aptitude and factual ability (the best way I can think of to describe it), and cognizance - having an inner voice, I suppose?

I know plenty of "smart" people, but most of them don't have a real inner monologue - they are unwilling to ponder and revise their personal convictions, etc. On the other hand, I know many people with a very active inner monologue, but who cannot recall facts, do well on aptitude tests, etc.

Of course, I can't do either. But we already know I'm a dunce.

Intelligence is being able to put "2 and 2 together" ad hoc. If you are often able to APPLY things learned on-the-fly, then you are intelligent. If you often correctly anticipate things based on facts and tendencies, then you are intelligent.
