What is it to be "Republican" in 2017?

What is that drives a person to say "I'm a 'Republican" in 2017? What are the policies and visions in the party that stoaks the fires of the mind?

You may not believe this.. I was a Republican.

I loved George Bush 41. I hated Bill Clinton. I voted for Bob Dole and George W. Bush the first time around.

After the Iraq War and its massive fuckup.. I opened my eyes.

I was not sold on Obama till the second debate against McCain.

But considering what Trump is.. I wanna be the complete opposite of him..

I have no clue what it's like to be Republican. Ever. Hated both Bushes as much as Clinton and Obama.

Incredibly stupid
Misogynists
Liars
Completely useless to society
Makes excuses for Trump by blaming Hilary for literally anything and everything
Nazi sympathisers

You can add the "I voted independent/Bernie" and "I didn't vote for Trump" catchphrases in there as well as most of these imbeciles aren't willing to own up to their stupidity. You see them here constantly defending the sack-of-shit himself and his equally dumb followers. It's not surprising how they constantly use the same Breitbart and Fox talking points to back up their supposedly 'independent' stance. Gives me a good chuckle knowing how transparent they are.

One could vote Republican for a number of reasons, such as duress, selfishness, lulz, etc., but to be conservative requires religion, and most republican voters are conservatives.

Often it's the same idiots defending religion who ask questions like, Why are republicans?

I believe you already know the answer to that question. My parents call me a liberal as I tend to lean left while they defend Trump no matter how ridiculous his behavior is so go figure.

Full of piss, anger and Russian propaganda?

I know respect for the Constitution or viable legislative policies isn't in the answer.

Easily swindled and shortsighted. They'll gladly vote against their best interests if it means the "other team" suffers too.

Pro-corruption, anti-science, anti-woman lemmings who advocate for elective foreign wars but also constantly strive to not fund them through tax avoidance. The christian dominionist streak varies by region. Lately this crowd is marked by a surprising tolerance, nee' comradeship, of the KKK and Nazis.

Nah it makes perfect sense, considering how dumb you are. If you weren't stupid then you could never have been a Republican. You clearly don't place much value on intelligence and education, or think them particularly valuable to the office, since you actually considered voting not just for McCain, someone probably 1/10 an Obama, but Palin too. Or had he not already picked her by the time of the 2nd debate? Obama was the easiest vote of our lifetimes.

A lack of intelligence (potential) doesn't necessarily follow from stupidity, and a stupid person with potential is still capable of learning. You've demonstrated that you haven't learned anything. Only idiots make voting decisions a la carte, with no understanding of or appreciation for what underlies the party affiliation. It's not American Idol. So in ways most important to other voters living in a democracy, you two are essentially the same. Both of you are stupid, and therefore dangerous. You're simply (presumably) a much nicer person than he is, but that's mostly only relevant to your friends, family and others you're in contact with personally. Neither of you should be president. But as voters you're the same.

lol, this fucking troll again. wanna see the most religious person I can think of?

This guy walks the walk 100%. He doesn't do it for face time on the news, he does it because of his core beliefs. Last I checked, he's a democrat.

To be Republican in 2017 is to... not be paying attention.

To be clear, there are some who are willfully ignorant. The ones who buy wholesale into the Breitbart/Daily Caller/Mike Cernovich crap and fool themselves into thinking that a billionaire President who appoints Goldman Sachs veterans, on-the-take politicians and his own family is "draining the swamp." The ones who see politics as a game and don't mind if they genuinely inflict mass suffering so long as their side 'won.'

But I'm thinking more of the pseudo-moderates, the ones who tend to vote Republican on autopilot. They either don't bother to fact-check Trump's near-constant lying, or don't care. They think repealing and replacing the ACA is great, but they don't actually notice that the proposed replacements so far are naked money grabs for the rich that would very likely kill thousands (if not tens of thousands) of low-income people. They like the sound of deregulation, but don't understand that Trump-era deregulation means getting rid of genuinely vital rules (say, preventing companies from dumping toxins into the water) and clearly being paid by the industry to look the other way (see: Scott Pruitt and Ajit Pai). They claim to hate corruption and vice ("but her emails!") without noticing that they voted for the most corrupt administration in US history.

To put it another way: a 2017 middle-of-the-road Republican is the sort of person who probably doesn't think much about their choices in general. They have a blind trust that everything will "just work out" and don't realize that no, it doesn't work that way anymore (not that it ever completely did). This is a leadership that's perfectly happy running the country, if not the entire planet, into the ground so long as it gets its kickbacks.

Sounds like you hate everyone. In my opinion that is the place where every voter should legitimately start. Have a strong dislike and mistrust for all politicians and then figure out through logic and reason who is the least objectionable based on policy rather than starting with blind loyalty and not having a clue what they're representing and trying to do to you, your friends and your family.
