My cat:

Sleeps with me at night.
Snuggles with me when I watch TV.
Greets me when I come home with face snuggles and nose licks.
Plays hunting games with me around the house, yet never bites or scratches me.
Plays fetch.
Loves to have his belly rubbed.
Never smells bad.
Can pee and poop without my assistance.

What more could I ask for?

I have a dog, lets call him "dumbass" (he's the 1st dog I've ever know that ran OVER a moving car). He's a pretty good dog, he'll play with people he knows and bark at strangers, he lets the kids beat him up, he'll let you know when he's hungry or thirsty.

I've had cats when I was groing up and all of them wer efairly non interactive. Just feed it and open the door when it beckens. In essence, the cat owns you.

Cats are more autonomous and less likely to destroy expensive stuff. Dogs require a bit more active attention. The same reason people who go out and do stuff alot usually have dogs

Because my cat knows enough to leave me the fvck alone when I've had a bad day at work. He also doesn't shove his nose into my visitors' private parts. I can leave food out all the time and he doesn't gorge himself and become overweight like a dog. He's self-cleaning and as long as I clean the box every other day, he leaves no smell.

With the exception of large breeds (think "great dane" and not "lab", a lab is not "large") dogs have a marked tendency to be overly clingy. Small and medium breed dogs are attention whores (smelly attention whores at that) that lose their mental capacity if they are left alone at all. People that talk about the "love" and "devotion" of dogs are really talking about the dog's obvious dependance.

There's a lot of people who like dogs for perfectly normal reasons (I would love to have a Malemute or a Dane someday when I have the room), but when people start talking about a dog's "devotion" I start seeing some signs of a dependent personality in the owner. If you need to be needed, then a dog is obviously for you. If you want a pet you pretty much never have to care for, a cat is for you. If you're somewhere in between these extremes, where normal people live, you'll be able to appreciate the unique traits of both cats and dogs and avoid making as arse of yourself like Sophalot did.

I have a cat.

She has A.D.D. And when she wants your attention, she won't take no for an answer!

It's funny you use great danes as an example. My friend had a male and female, and they were the biggest attention whores. Following right on your heels, licking your hand to get your attention, and leaning their full weight on your leg when you'd pet 'em. Watson, the male, would almost knock me over every time he leaned on me. But then, he did weigh 3/4 of what I do.

Such sweet temperments. I wish I had enough room for a dane.

As for most of the rest of the thread, "generalize....blah....stereotype....ect."

You have to take the dog out to poop and pee.

Meaning I can't have a life with a dog. They are the biggest pain in the arse that one can have next to a kid.

I just kind of like the idea that this cute little ball of fur has razor sharp claws and kills everything it can get it's hands on. Of course I keep the claws trimmed so he doesn't wreck my furniture but he keeps all pest animals out of my house. And if anything is in the walls / cupboard / closet he sits in front of it and points right to whatever it is.

Plus, cat + laser pointer = more fun than pretty much anything.

I saw this show on discovery about how house cats killed anything smaller / same size as them and they are the only member of the cat family that kills for fun. Some 600+ species, if I remember correctly. And when a cat kills something it either eats it or brings it to you as a gift. Dogs just kind of eat part of whatever they can find and then carry whatever's left in their mouths. For weeks.

I've owned/been owned/co-existed with many pets, mainly out of collective guilt that man has so bred them for his own purpose that they can't survive on their own. Guess I'm just a hippy at heart.

We have dogs, cats, guinea pigs, birds, and turtles.

We have three cats that all do this. Dogs are smarter than cats?

As others have mentioned, my cats don't bury their noses in my friend's crotches when they visit (nor do they lick their hands or have to be told to LEAVE IT, SIT, STAY, GET OUTTA HERE, etc.).

How about some people like cats, some people like dogs, and some people like them both?

Seems pretty simple to me...

This is the correct answer.

I'm a dog person, but they do require a lot of devotion and attention. It's worth it, though.

To support my argument on dogs, I just have to say that I don't see any police cats, seeing eye cats, or bomb sniffing cats around. They are pretty useless and uber dirty (no showers ever?).

Cats are selfish pets for selfish people... with the exception of those cats that kill anything and don't fear going outside the house.

edit some more: cat owners are not nearly the caliber of dog owners now that I look at prev edit.

w..t..f.... are you on crack?

I've never seen such blatant stereotyping!

It's hard to compare the intelligence of such different animals, but they both have similar encephalization quotients, so they're roughly in the same ballpark. Which is probably why the debate exists.
