What is it with nerds and cats?

Sometimes it seems like 80% of the tech savvy world owns a cat. Everytime you see a pic of someones pet on the net it's always a cat. Why? Personally I'm a dog person, they just seem so much more lively, affectionate, and emotional. Cats seem cold, uninterested, and boring to me. I'll agree that cats are cute, especially when they are young, but so are dogs, more so to me. I know cats have personalities once you get to know them but they don't seem to exhibit the unconditional love and affection that dogs always do. I just want to go up and hug a friendly dog. But why do so many people on ATOT and the net in general own cats?

Dog owners can play with their dogs almost any time they want. Cat owners must capture every opportunity they have to play with their pets. Just my .02.

what does that have anything to do with what the OP says?

For my answer, I think that nerds are introverts just like cats.

Nerds feel like they don't have to try to be likeable to meet a status quoa of that of a sociable person, thus why they relate to cats. Nerds think that they are deeply cute in a genius way (which is false) and match their personalities with cats.

I agree with the OP on the stance with dogs. They are much smarter, loyal and a much better pet all around. However they require time... lots of it. To support my argument on dogs, I just have to say that I don't see any police cats, seeing eye cats, or bomb sniffing cats around. They are pretty useless and uber dirty (no showers ever?).

Cats are selfish pets for selfish people... with the exception of those cats that kill anything and don't fear going outside the house.

edit: to give cats credit... you can be totally a crap owner and play WoW 24/7 straight so long as you keep a 50 lb bag of feed laying around and have an auto kitty litter cleaner.

edit some more: cat owners are not nearly the caliber of dog owners now that I look at prev edit.

I am a nerd, I like cats. To me, dogs are annoying and filthy, shitting and slobbering everywhere. Cats are calm, clean and just as likable

So what do you say to those with cats and dogs? It's not fair to categorize people who have certain pets as people with particular personalities...

Dog owners play with their dogs. Cat owners realize their opportunities to play with their cats are limited, and therefore take as many pictures as possible to remind them of these precious moments. If they've already got the photos, they're one step closer to uploading them onto the web. Basically, cat owners are online attention whores because they don't get attention from thier pet(s).

IMHO.

simple.

cats require less upkeep, thus allowing for more (whatever FPS game is popular right now) time.

6 posts into the thread and I'm already baffled.

I like cats because they are small, self-cleaning and affectionate - and I don't really need a guard dog. Dogs are the more intelligent species and serve man like no other, no doubt - but I don't think me liking cats has anything to do with, "Cats are selfish pets for selfish owners who like to attention whore their cat pics online"

:disgust: It's just a preference. People have all kinds of pets: geckos, goldfishes, ponies and turtles. To each his own. What SophalotJack & Pandamonium are saying is borderline offensive to cat owners. You might be right that cats and their owners do have a higher possibility of leading sedentary, introverted lives.

And yeah, the reason you don't see Police cats is the same reason you don't see Police Poodles/Daschchunds/Chihuahuas. And Pumas/Cheetahs/Tigers aren't as plentiful as German Shepherds, neither are they practical - nor are they particularly social creatures that enjoy being trained. They are independent creatures.

I could say dog owners are opinionated, ego tripping self-absorbed people who think they are better than the rest based on your post. But that ain't true.

The cat in our house goes poo poo outside of house, so no smell. Give him some milk and a little catfood and he's set. Basically less maintenance, while still pleasing to have on the lap purring.. Generally cats have a smaller profile than dogs if they are living in the house, just IMO..

And yeah, almost forgot, u can give cats a bath once in a while, altho they r affraid of water , still doable

Im pretty sure a cat wouldn't have the strength or weight to influence a blind persons actions and can't really make sufficient noise warning.

They also take baths every day when they lick themselves, pulling off old or dirty fur.

OMG, you guys are prejudiced.

I like both cats and dogs, and I own two cats. The reason is quite simple. I am a very busy man, and I simply do not have the time for a dog.

My cat is awesome, we play fetch, and she is damn loyal. She follows me everywhere (why I named her shadow), and she doesn't ****** and piss all over my carpet like my girlfriend's dog.

EDIT: I love dogs too, but only if they have more than half a brain... unlike one of my gf's dogs who is a half cocker spaniel and is a complete retard. The other one is a poodle mix and he's awesome, I wish she had two of him.

No cats here.

The Shih Tzu won't permit them. In fact I think the only reason I am allowed to live here is that I am tall enough to reach the box of treats.

Having a dog requires you to leave the house at least twice a day, and it's a big scary world beyond the front door.

Dogs are great - well, some of them. My old dog, before I had to put her down, was one of the best animals we've ever had. Smartest, most loyal, wonderfully personable dog ever. Cats are awesome too - most of them. We've got this one cat that always has something to say, he walks around meowing at everything. He's very friendly and affectionate, I just wish he'd shut up every once and a while.

And for those who say cats never need attention, you've never met my cat! If I stop moving and sit or lounge somewhere for more then 5 minutes, pow, she's there on my shoulder, lap or leg.

I love both kinds of animals equally, but right now, the cats > the dogs. The dogs we have, one is a grump that just sits in his corner and chews on his ass, the other one is a crazy rocket-powered energizer battery that never stops moving unless he's in his cage asleep. a Shih Tzu and Min Pin, respectively.

I like animals in general, dogs and cats (and birds, mice, snakes, lizards; you name it). They lack the culpability for their actions that humans do, more pure. I've owned/been owned/co-existed with many pets, mainly out of collective guilt that man has so bred them for his own purpose that they can't survive on their own. Guess I'm just a hippy at heart.

Most pet owners that have never owned a cat seem to think along the lines of what you're saying.

The reality of it is though is cat's do have unique personalities and much easier to care for. They are good for people that can't/don't have the time to walk a pet and cats can be left unattended for a week or so at a time as long as they have enough food, water and a clean litter box.

I have two cats currently but have had plenty of dogs in my life as well and love both for pets but with my life the way it is now a dog would not be a viable option where as a cat is.

Who knows, you know what they say about lies and statistics.

I have a dog anyway. They are higher maintenance, though...dogs.
