Right now I am on my way to a bachelor's in electrical engineering. Once finished, I thought of getting my master's. However, once I get my BSEE, I am just about 3/4 of the way to getting a bachelor's in Computer Engineering. This means with another year or so of school, I'd have 2 degrees. My question is, what would do me better in the long run... a double major EE/CE or a master's in EE? Anyone here have experience with either? Thanks

agreed...masters.

One thing I always thought in school was people in accounting would be accountants... bank and finance would be bankers or financial advisors... etc. The thing that employers look at is what you have accomplished and how well you did at it. The master's will look like more of an accomplishment in any field you decide to go into.

there is such an overlap between the two that you are better off getting your masters. Even as an EE, you can still get a CE job. BSEE or BSCE are becoming more common. What is hard to find is a good candidate...and usually people who go for the masters are in a better position to be seen as a "good" candidate.

Considering how similar a computer engineering degree is to an electrical degree, I'd say go for the master's

Go masters. The majors aren't that different. Most jobs you'll apply for, you could do with either. It isn't really about the degree, they are equal IMO, it is about your application of the knowledge. Most jobs will teach you what you need to know.

btw BSCompE 2005, when I see CE, I think Chemical Engineering.

I'm getting a history degree, because after transferring with an AS its the degree that I can get the quickest plus I plan on going back into the Army. Once back in I'll start taking classes for my MBA.

Masters for sure. EE and CE degrees are very similar, hence the large overlap in courses.

Are you planning on going in to research afterwards or a specialized field in engineering?

Chemical Engineering is ChemE or ChemEng. CE is Civil Engineering.

I can't understand why anyone would consider multiple minors or multiple bachelor's degrees when with the same amount of work, time, and classes they can get a master's degree. A master's degree will open more doors and give a higher salary. The only reason to get a minor or a double degree is if it didn't require any more time or effort or classes or money (which I don't think ever really happens to most people).

If you really want variety, you can get a BS in EE and a masters in CE. It wouldn't be any more time than a double major in EE and CE. Or, take the BS and MS in EE. There isn't a huge difference in job prospects.

I'm taking all signal processing classes except a few electives. In the end I definitely want to do something with signal processing. Something dealing with audio/music would be ideal.

Thanks guys. I should probably start looking at schools soon....

you will learn more with 2 bachelors, but you will be more employable with the masters

the latter is all that counts, imo

you would want to be an EE with a masters then. DSP is a very hard field to get into and the market is not exactly hot for it when it comes to new grads. Getting a job in that field would be pretty hard with just a BSEE/CE. My advice would be to get a job doing DSP work at Raytheon or something...then move onto audio later on.

Well I don't necessarily HAVE to get into a DSP position right out of school. I'll take whatever looks good / I'm offered out of school, get a few years of experience, and then try to see what I can get after that. I'd have a better shot with experience and a master's I guess.
