so as you can see the areas to explore were much greater

bg2 had much better designed areas with more stuff but there were a lot less of them

combining the two would have been better than either of them seperately

I highly recommend the Requiem mod. Frustratingly difficult early on, great satisfaction for sticking with it as your power grows. I couldn't complete it on vanilla with the unsatisfactory creature/loot leveling. Boring IMO. Requiem makes it more cRPG.

definitly like it. the increase in difficulty is not a static increase. it is a dynamic increase of difficulty. run it with frostfall and a needs mod for even better realism.

You popped out at Waukeens promenade but were allowed to leave immediately and never had to come back. You only have to do one thing in the Slums and are automatically taken to the important house the first time you visit.

You never actually NEED to go thru the Bridge or Government or Temple district. You only need to visit the graveyard once during the main quest and again are automatically taken to the important crypt for the plot.
Docks are necessary to visit multiple times but only a couple buildings.

Darnise hold is totally optional as is Trademeet, Druids Grove, Umar Hills, windpear, and temple ruins.

Also Watchers Keep is totally optional. As are 2 of the 3 caverns in the Underdark.
You dont NEED to do the Sahagin area, but if you pass it up you can never go back either.

I don't follow your logic. Some of those areas may not be part of the main quest, but BG2 wasn't a game where you could just do only the main quest. Everyone of those districts and locations had quests starting, finishing, and running through them. Darnise Keep was essential if you were a fighter and wanted a stronghold, Trademeet was essential if you were a druid and wanted a stronghold, so on.

so basically allowing for all races and classes all of those areas are optional. however you are likely to go to all the city areas and at least some of the optional areas are necessary to get enough gold and experience. basically both of you guys are right

loved skyrim until i finally decided to do the final quest chain and the "epic" battle was over in like 2 hits.... barely touched it after that disappointment.

Defeated the world eater
Got killed by a bandit in one hit.

That was always one of the weird things about Skyrim. At the higher levels, some of the common enemies are harder to fight that the final boss. Still enjoyed it though, but can't imagine sinking 800hrs into it.

As far as long open world western RPGs, probably the Fallout series or the older Elder Scrolls games are the best bets. The Elder Scrolls MMO is coming out this year. Fallout 4 has been rumoured for a long time but Bethesda has yet to officially announce it.

If you have a console, especially a PS3, there are some meaty JRPGs out there like the Disgaea series, Ni No Kuni, etc.

you need to go back and look thru the thread.

We were talking about the benefits of BG1 vs. BG2.

I would *highly* recommend leaving most of the .ini tweaks alone. General consensus is that the tweaks generally increase instability more than helping, although obligatory everyone's situation is different, blah blah.

Honestly, I would highly recommend using the STEP wiki (and forums) for Skyrim setup and troubleshooting. Some of the most in-depth mod compilations and trouble shooting in those forums.
