I highly recommend the Requiem mod. Frustratingly difficult early on, great satisfaction for sticking with it as your power grows. I couldn't complete it on vanilla with the unsatisfactory creature/loot leveling. Boring IMO. Requiem makes it more cRPG.
You popped out at Waukeens promenade but were allowed to leave immediately and never had to come back. You only have to do one thing in the Slums and are automatically taken to the important house the first time you visit.
You never actually NEED to go thru the Bridge or Government or Temple district. You only need to visit the graveyard once during the main quest and again are automatically taken to the important crypt for the plot.
Docks are necessary to visit multiple times but only a couple buildings.
Darnise hold is totally optional as is Trademeet, Druids Grove, Umar Hills, windpear, and temple ruins.

Also Watchers Keep is totally optional. As are 2 of the 3 caverns in the Underdark.
You dont NEED to do the Sahagin area, but if you pass it up you can never go back either.
I don't follow your logic. Some of those areas may not be part of the main quest, but BG2 wasn't a game where you could just do only the main quest. Everyone of those districts and locations had quests starting, finishing, and running through them. Darnise Keep was essential if you were a fighter and wanted a stronghold, Trademeet was essential if you were a druid and wanted a stronghold, so on.
loved skyrim until i finally decided to do the final quest chain and the "epic" battle was over in like 2 hits.... barely touched it after that disappointment.

you need to go back and look thru the thread. We were talking about the benefits of BG1 vs. BG2.
