Skyrim's fun/$ is about as good as it gets.
Steams says I have played 800 hours.
That is over 13 hours of game play per dollar.

And, of course, we can all quibble with things about this, or any other game, but over all it was a amazing game.

Currently trying out Far Cry 3. Very good - better than Far Cry 2. But, is there anything on the horizon that looks like it might be as good as Skyrim was?

Elder Scrolls Online.

Which I'm not happy about, but whatever.

Fallout 4 is being worked on, its a long way off.

have you tried out morrowind

skyrim is a very entertaining game but it is not a game classic. morrowind is a game classic. skyrim has good moment gameplay but the story and overall compexity and soul of the game is not that great. they made it to mainstream. morrowind has more soul and the quests are nice. there are mods to give it nicer graphics like mgeui or something like that.

the amount of content in skyrim is somewhat large but the map is way too small for it. the map should be atleast twice as big in every direction which goes as 4 times as big. that and some of the content was not finished like the civil war and the bards college. have you run skyrim with mods? they make skyrim much better in many ways.

have you tried the old dnd games from bioware and black isle? that is what rpgs are to me. they have a lot of content.

witcher 3 is supposed to come out sometime. witcher 2 was actually good. only problem was it was way too short. like i finished it in 3 or 4 or 5 days. that and the choices are obviously overt and there are not that many. at least the supposadly big game choices. they do make a difference as far as where you go in the game. also the maps were way too small

AFAIK the core Bethesda team didn't do ESO, they are a new studio set up by Zenimax.

Bethesda better be working on Fallout 4 and ONLY Fallout 4. Theyd be silly not to be.

Fallout: Vegas or Fallout 3 with all the DLC. I prefer Vegas' mechanics.

Hope they come out with another single player RPG in the Elder Scrolls universe. I was *very* disappointed that they decided to make an on-line money grab instead of another single player game. Skyrim is probably the last game to come out that I would consider great (easy, just my opinion).

I know it is a different studio, etc, but it is eerily similar to Bioware, who never produced a game even close to the quality of their previous RPGs after they went to the "dark side" and made TOR.

I have 300+ hours in Skyrim. Thought I'd done close to everything and then I got the Prima Legendary guide for the game and couldn't believe the crap ton of stuff I've missed. So I'm actually getting more enjoyment out of the game with the guide now because there's just no way I would have found everything the game has to offer otherwise just wandering around.

I have Morrowind installed with graphics mods and it looks great. I plan on playing either it someday, or the Skywind mod which is Morrowind redone using the Skyrim engine. No idea when that's going to be ready though.

As much as I love the ES franchise, from my very first play of Arena, I can't call Skyrim great. The world was beautiful, but the gameplay was very shallow: way too much hand-holding; way, way too much boilerplate, useless loot; way, way, way too few NPC voicings repeated far too often, etc., etc. Dragons were basically flying Oblivion gates. Too common and too easy to kill. All this stuff has become so endemic to the whole Bethesda design philosophy that it's essentially their trademark now: beautiful worlds, empty as a bag of air.

Hold on a min. When I was a kid, we had Space Invaders and Asteroids. I don't expect the same level of story in my video games. What Skyrim offered was over the top in my opinion.

Maybe this new Middle Earth: Shadows of Mordor game will be in a similar style. Open world, lots of ways to explore. There isn't a lot of info yet but the game looks beautiful and the combat is a lot more action packed than skyrim which is a good thing.

You need to play on something besides Novice.

The hand-holding comes from console kiddies whining about how difficult Oblivion was.
Which is funny because the gameplay mechanics were toned WAY down from Morrowind after they complained about THAT.

You shouldnt have even waited for an official printed guide:

On the horizon? Dragon Age Inquisition is looking to be pretty good. A lot more open-world exploration to it than previous Dragon Age games, though the developers are quick to say it's not quite as open-world as an Elder Scrolls game.

I must say I prefer the Fallout universe more than the Elder Scrolls universe.

Hopefully they do a Fallout 4 before Elder Scrolls 6.

While not as many hours will go into it, likely, I'm hopeful for both The Wither 3, and Cyberpunk 2077. The Witcher is one of those game series that should feel generic, and kind of suck, but CDP breathed life into the world it is set in. The first one is a good start, with Flash's mod, if you want to check it out (but not on Steam, because the devs/publishers should get a couple more bucks. PM me, if you want 1 and 2, and I'll finally pay you back for Tribes ).

CP2020 has been tried before, and was kinda sorta OK. The attitude CDP was able to give The Witcher's game world could be just what's needed to make it work in a video game, though. If they can't do it, it's safe to say it can't be done, at this point in the evolution of human artistic endeavors.

Morrowind, with the MGSO, and selected gameplay mods, is worth diving into. It's kind of small, still shows its age with the overhaul (animations, especially), but is richly populated, ruins are creepier than in Skyrim, and you can spend hours and hours just exploring the cities, sewers, catacombs, etc..

FO4 is in the works, but FO3 and FNV were both great, especially once modded up a bit. Definitely worth trying, despite your wanting more fantasy settings.

investigate it.
thing isnt done yet.

By the time its out you may be ready to play a full conversion.

It's also most likely going to leave out a ton of content. They'll bring over the main story and some of the bigger side quests. But it would be too much work to try and import every little side quest and make sure it works properly in the Skyrim engine.
