what is sigma 6?

anybody taken sigma 6? How valuable is it to companies?? Is it something that you study for and then you take a test to get certified??

My company has a lot of training courses for it, and I'm wondering if I should ask to take it. But is it something that is widely known and big companies would be impressed by??

what is it exactly? the description sounds like teaching you how to be a good manager or something.

anybody have experience?

Personally I know a lot of people with their 6 sigma certs and they don't know ******. They're not smarter or more skilled than anyone else. It's typical "take our program and you'll improve everything 100000%", BS

Just like Lean Manufacturing. It's a way for consultants to rack up big bucks trying to implement the un-inplementable.

Six sigma is about quality control and eliminating defects. A "sigma" is a deviation from the standard. At "six sigma" you are six deviation points from standard, and it's something like 1 defect in 3 million. Six sigma is about as close to perfection as you can get.

Typically you have green belts which just take a day long class over the philosophy of six sigma. They can't do anything, they are just conversationally functional with the process.

Blackbelts are the next step up and have several weeks worth of class time plus an "internship" of sorts. It's an actual position and you lead "Six Sigma" teams to help make them more efficient and provide better results.

Master Black Belt is the top of the chain and look at the big picture results of the smaller sigma teams.

Yep... I remember for like 2 months straight there was nothing but town hall meetings and training damn near every day.... finally someone high up figured out the last 2 months we were slipping across the board and nixed the idea very quickly in fear that our quater results were gonna be the biggest eye sore ever to be seen.... they just said "in the future... just try harder OK?".

The problem with these programs is the people who run them aren't smart enough to realize that every company has things setup differently and some ideas simply fail. Lean manufacturing is a good idea, but doesn't always work with all processes.
