What is sRGB?

My monitor, along with some other color settings, has an sRGB setting. This just seems to make the picture more yellow (but picture colors are better) and disables contrast and brightness settings. What is sRGB good for?

Ok. Allow me to make this clearer. I have, along with usual 9500K, 6500K, etc. color presets, an sRGB (and I know what RGB stands for like 15 years, thank you) setting. I have found an article about it at w3c.org, but it was too technical.
Anyone else?

AFAIK (from my color science class) sRGB is a calibrated color space. If your monitor supports sRGB, that should be the most accurate representation of the pixel values according to a certain standard. (but then again, I slept in that class a lot...)

sRGB is a default colour space enabling monitors, scanners and printers to be 'reading from the same book'................ ie. using the same colour profiles>its not much use scanning a picture in from paper if your monitor shows everything as a different shade/colour is it?

But, unless you need it for grfx work turn it off as it has a lower gamut (colour range) than standard RGB.

A quick way to think of things is this

Hold a picture/photograph up in a dark/blacked out room (you can't see it can you?)
Now in the same room turn on your monitor and display the same picture (from a scan you made earlier) you can now easily see it can't you.......................does this help.

@tart666 : lol. From the look of documents I found on the web about the subject, I would have slept in that class too.
@monzie : thx. I think I'll return to the normal settings, as I said before, sRGB makes whites look kind of yellow. (didn't get the bit about the dark room though)

Whats hard to understand about my explanation?????????

If a scanned picture is visible on a monitor when the original is not (in the blacked out room.........in bed maybe?) then OBVIOUSLY the picture on the monitor is no longer the same shade or colour as the original is it (you aren't daft enough to believe it is are you)?

If it was in the same colour space as the original you would not be able to see it, would you, just like you can't see the original...............c'mon this is 10year old kiddy stuff.
