Was born and lived in Texas for most of my life...Texas is definately "south"...some towns are more "south" than others though....haha!

I agree with what one person said "it's North Mexico"...the best Mexican food in the world! Now living in Ohio and really miss the Mexican food !

I am irrationally proud of being a Texan! I love it so much that I am not even bothering to look for jobs outside of the state. My current gf and I have had arguments about leaving the state (for work) and pretty much decided that if she wants to leave, its gonna be without me. Shes not a native Texan btw.

My wife grew up in Texas (Austin mainly) so I get to hear all the Texas propaganda. They actually have a neat history of Anglos and Mexicans settling the area - and eventually fighting Mexico for their independence. I usually refer to Texas as "North Mexico" - but only to piss Texans off. Austin's a great place to visit (or live) but I wouldn't want to pay their property taxes.

BTW - the first settlers in Texas (excluding Native Americans) were refugees from New Mexico (Santa Fe).

QFT. My sister lives near Brownsville (in Harlingen). That place might as well be mexico.

Property taxes are fairly high, but no state income tax rules.

I lived in Texas for 4 years. I was stationed in the middle of nowhere and hated it. But the big cities are what won me over. Right now there is a group of us ex-AF planning on moving to San Antonio.

I lived in Texas for 14 years, and I liked it.

Texas IS its own country - and a large one at that

It has desert, plains, plateaus, hill country, mountains, forests, swamps, coast, grasslands, etc... and takes a day to drive across. Yeah, pretty much qualifies as a medium-sized nation.

I didn't know that geographic features were qualifications for nationhood?

I left everyone else to talk about culture and history. I was merely remarking that Texas is certainly big enough and has enough natural resources to be a self-sufficient nation. With all the oil, gas, minerals, crops, industry, military, etc. it certainly outstrips most countries in terms of GDP and economic and military power.
