What is that file.shtml?something ?

I've seen several sites where links point to some .shtml file which has a query string after.
Something like article.shtml?ID=10&page=2 . That looks like perl commands to me. Can you use perl commands in a .shtml file or is that ?ID=10&page=2 done by some sort of advanced SSI commands? If they are SSI commands, can you tell me where to find some info about them?

 

SHTML is server-side HTML. It means the server does formatting of the document before sending it back to the client. Usually it is just appending includes, headers or footers.

The junk after the page is just the query string. The query string can be anything and it all depends on the context of what you are doing on the site. If you look at the address of this page it should say something like threadid=192088&messid=121292 meaning that is thread is #192088 and this message is #121292. This is all handled by some server process (in this case Cold Fusion) when the page is submitted.

Can you tell me a website which explains how to use query strings in shtml? I have searched the web but all server side includes tutorials but they only explain the basic tags like include.

 

The query strings are parsed by some form of server task. It could be anything from CGI, ASP, JSP, CF, etc.

Just to a web search of CGI primers and you should find out everything you want to know.
