Best part of SF is the corkage/wine culture

Be that as it may, when comparing the restaurants in each city head to head SF doesn't measure up. Sorry, but Gary Danko and Coi just aren't even in the same class as Per Se, Alinea, or Le Bernardin. I'd even argue for Sydney, Australia over San Francisco.

I think Chicago unfairly gets stiffed in food city discussions--criminally so--but I can't possibly see how it beats SF. Thing with SF, though....people tend to include the Bay Area, which is massive and maybe that is unfair. When you ignore the East Bay and South Bay, and of course Napa and Sonoma, you ignore the largest appeal of SF when it comes to the foodie community.

I can't speak on behalf of individual cooks and restaurants but the Bay Area definitely has every kind of food you could possibly want and pretty good ones at that. Not to mention the wine. Sydney is obviously good as well but how can one possibly compare the two? I'll throw another city out that has amazing food: Hong Kong. Now how would one compare those 3 cities fairly? I'd say they're all great.

People in the South are some of the friendliest in the whole country. They have kick ass food - especially in places like LA.

For me a great place to visit. The weather makes it completely unlivable. I don't understand why so many people live in places like Houston that simply has unbearable weather.

Family and fear of the unknown, mostly. I'm from the South and have lived in the Midwest and upstate New York. The cultures are fairly different and since we're used to fairly over-the-top friendliness down here, the lack of it elsewhere can make it seem unwelcoming. Of course, once you get to know people, they're just like everyone else.

For me it's my job and the fact that I can't sell my house. I'd like to try the Pacific Northwest if I can ever get out from under this house.

I now make 2-3 trips a year for work and vacation to the Bay Area and I've found good food on every occasion but it's hard for me to really say it's on par with Chicago or New York. I will say that the SF metro area has the best food on the west coast.

The restaurant scene has come back from the recession over the past couple years with a vengeance along with newer/younger restaurateurs and chefs. There are so many new places opening up it's unbelievable.

I was born in the North (Maine 12yrs, then NY for ~12yrs), have lived in the South (Florida) for ~2.5 years and now in the West (Nevada) for the last ~3. They all have their pros and cons but if I had to rank them it'd be.

1. Nevada
2. Maine
3. NY

.
50. Florida

Wow does that place suck.

In its defense, it is a far smaller city and punches above its weight compared to other top 10 cities in the U.S. While the bigger cities may have an individual restaurant or two better than anything in SF (i.e. Buddkhan or Morimoto's in Philly, Rasika in Washingon DC, etc) it's also true that SF has a larger selection of excellent but not elite choices.

I've always wondered the same. Way too damn hot for one thing, too fast paced/busy, high cost of living... It's like Toronto, great place to visit but would not want to live there.

Yep. Sucks here in FL big time.

Don't forget to layer your clothing before you go out in the morning.

What pros does Nevada have besides no income tax?

Are you eating regularly at those places? I mean don't get me wrong, those are amazing places, but there are lots of great restaurants in the lower tiers that I can dine at affordably, eat deliciously, and get to try out all sorts of different wines.

I stopped reading when you had a problem with someone carrying a firearm.

I was born and raised in the most North state we have. Now live in the South. There are pro's and con's to each. There are far too many unique cities and places to live to just say one or the other sucks. Unless you are an ignorant troll that is.

Don't forget about the beautiful Texan women. I go to Texas a couple times per year touring with a band. I love it there, if only for that reason.

Really? I heard obesity is worse in Texas? 3 of the fattest cities in America are in Texas i heard. Unless u like big women, maybe Texas is not so hit for women then?

Looks fvcking brutal, how can you endure!
It's extremely tough. I have to strip down all the way to shorts and a t-shirt just to survive the brutal high-60s temps. I don't even get to enjoy scraping the ice off of my windshield in the morning or shoveling snow out of my driveway. It's just completely devoid of pleasure around here.

In the height of summer you can cook an egg on the sidewalk up north too. Dare I mention Hurricane Sandy?

Not for the most of the year and a freak storm in a small part of the north compared to yearly events for most of the state is a big issue.
