What is the ATOT consensus on sick days?

Is it okay for to take a sick day under the following situations:
- blowing chunks
- sore throat
- simply tired but not really sick
- need to do household chores
- hungover
- need to help family (kids, parents, etc)

How far do you personally go with sick days?

If you have combined vacation+sick days then go away and ignore this thread. This is for those of us who have a separate allowance of sick days each year.

Taking a sick day is stealing from the company. I think that's what was decided upon last time this came up? :hmm:

I have no incentive to use sick days, because no one is going to do my work while I'm gone.

If I'm feeling REALLY bad, which almost never happens, I'll stay home. If the roads are bad with snow/ice, I'll wait until after rush hour to head for work.

id stay home till im 24 hrs without fever and diarrhea/puking.

if i had a separate bank of sick time per year, i would surely come down with something around the holidays (which is why separate sick is bad policy)

the consensus was that we have some really stupid people who think having a separate pool for vacation and sick days is better than having 1 pool of personal time off that can be used whenever.

I'm not sure that would work for people like me. I get 28 vacation days a year and no limit on sick days (within reason). So sick days do not come out of vacation time, but I don't have a bunch I need to "use up".

Depends. I treat sick days like personal days. If there's some reason I can't come in because not feeling well/something important, than use your sick days.

If you're not going in because you're lazy or decided to drink on a work night, then get your ass to work.

I accrue sick days and never think about it. I'm pretty sure I am at 140+ hours.

I usually just use them in lieu of vacation days when on vacation...as that will get paid out in the end.

but yeah, I'll use a sick day just because. who gives a shit?

There is an advantage to having sick days and personal time off: you usually get paid for unused sick time, where personal days are not compensated if you don't use them.

Our business specifically disallows this. Any sick day taken adjacent to vacation days is counted as an unexcused absence without pay.

it's so strange. I am always sick for the two weeks around christmas and new years, on my birthday, around thanksgiving, etc.

funny how that always happens.

Go to work and get paid for feeling like shit.

It sounds like you are attending elementary school with "unexcused absences".

What kind of joke is that?

We don't have a limit on sick days. I probably use two or three per year for not-really-deathly-ill situations.

One every three months at minimum for "mental health", and then anytime else when you're legitamately sick. That includes waking up with a headache, being super tired(as in didn't sleep a wink the night before), and all the other bad sicknesses.
Since sick days aren't paid out, some neferious characters here take 5 months off before they retire as "stress leave", just to burn them up. That's bush league, right there.

Preaching to the choir. I've also been warned about using "too many sick days" while still staying below the maximum allowed per year. It reminds me of the "pieces of flair" from Office Space. If you don't want me using so many sick hours per year, don't give me so many. Don't act like I'm stealing from you when I have a rough night and know I'm going to be incredibly inefficient if I come into work.

I have "sick" days, but it's practically impossible for me to use them baring some *MAJOR* complication/operation/disease.

First three days of "leave" is PTO. After the third, and you have a doctors note you can start tapping into the sick leave. As an otherwise healthy, young male I'll never use that time. It's great for women that will be going on maternity leave and old people who are going through whatever physical ailments they have, or if you were in a car wreck or something.

I've had a couple recent bouts of terrible stomach viruses that left me so dehydrated and weak that I had to go to the ED and get tanked up on IV's. Missed three days work from them each time and had an actual hospital admission. Don't matter. PTO time even though I've got 200 some odd hours sitting in the sick bank. Bleh.

Meh. PTO encourages people to come to work sick and pass it on to me. I mean I'd like the extra flexibility as long as the number of days is the same, but I know my ass would be at work unless I was deathly ill so I could use it for real vacation time.
