I think it just makes everything a little more spread out and not so cluttered and the picture seems to look more crisp. I used to play on a 23in monitor at 1680x1050 and it was good, but when I went to a 27in monitor at 1920x1080 I noticed a big difference.

I'm sure it would even be better playing at 2560x1600, but that would take more juice for sure lol.

Bigger resolution does help smooth out the impression of jaggies, because smaller pixels blend together smoothly compared to big pixels that are easier to discern, at a given distance from your monitor.

Wider aspect ratio can help too, depending whether the game supports it. For example, in Starcraft 2, you'd get a competitive advantage if you use a 16:9 ratio (e.g., 1920x1080, or 1366x768) compared to someone using a 16:10 ratio (e.g., 1920x1200, or 1680x1050).

Isn't that weird? If you have *FEWER* pixels, like 1366x768, you'd be in a better position compared to someone using *MORE* pixels of 1680x1050. But that's just because of the aspect ratios and how SC2 works. But if the aspect ratios are the same for two displays, then usually more pixels is always better visually.

The higher resolution means sharper images in most scenarios. However, also take notice of your aspect ratio. I prefer 16:10 (1920x1200) over 16:9 because you gain a decent amount of vertical field of view; unless the game is Diablo 3 where it just zooms in to fill up the screen instead of actually revealing more vertical image :shakes fist:

Edit:
That gif above ^ is actually a bit misleading as it shows 16:10 as losing horizontal range over the 16:9 but actually the 16:10 would be the same width as the 16:9 but the 16:9 would lose vertical space compared to the 16:10. But, being that it's SC2, it probably suffers from the same Diablo3 zoom issue with 16:10.... grrrr.

The gif is correct, and yes SC2 "suffers" from the idea that the aspect ratio will be achieved by chopping off the sides of the image, instead of gluing on additional vertical information.

That's the trick with aspect ratios - it depends on the game, whether you will gain or lose information by changing aspect ratio.

For example, in a game like Bioshock, if you change the aspect ratio by adding vertical resolution, you will see additional vertical information. But SC2 is not like that, and apparently Diablo3 is the same way, where if you add vertical resolution, these games instead will "zoom in" by chopping off the sides to make the image more "squarish" so you end up with a net loss of information.

You can check on sites like widescreengaming, and they will rate the game as Hor+ or Vert- or whatever the actual rating is; that tells you if changing the aspect ratio will reveal more info (+) or chop off info (-), and which way it happens (vert or hor). I think, haven't looked at it in a while. Just know that it changes by game.

If all you do is play SC2, then 16:9 resolution is pretty much mandatory so set your 1920x1200 display to run as 1920x1080. That's definitely what I do, and I don't mind the letterboxing (black bars on top and bottom) when I play SC2, because I see more.

The biggest difference is it makes enemies easier to see at a distance. An enemy soldier that might be a blob at low res will have visible arms and legs at high resolution. Secondary effect is how much space UI takes up. Text has to be a minimum pixel height to be readable, so you can scale the UI smaller on a higher resolution monitor.
