What is the best CD or DVD drive

Title says it all. I am looking for a really good CD rom or DVD rom to play games on. Let me know.

Chucu, you're going to have to post a bit more info on what you're looking for in a CD or DVD-Rom drive. I know you say "to play games on," but there are other items to take into account when choosing a drive. In the future you may want to make backups of s/w that you own, and here's an area where all drives are not created equal.

I thought I made it clear. I want a CDROM or a DVDROM. I do not want to burn CD-s I already have a drive for that. all this drive needs to do is play games.

If all you're going to do is play games, then just get a regular CD-ROM drive. They're all about the same, and one is really not that much better than another. They will all do the same thing for you. Just spend $20-$30 and get the fastest that you can find. Hope this helps.

I did that before, buy the fastest/best drive. I got a 52x sony drive and it is the worst CDROM I have ever owned.

hey....if you want a decent quality drive, look into the liteon 16x dvd drive....they are fast and quality made....ill have to look up the model #....but i know you can get it on newegg

I did that before, buy the fastest/best drive. I got a 52x sony drive and it is the worst CDROM I have ever owned.
It might help if you told why you hated the Sony.

I just picked up the ASUS 52x. It's a great CD-ROM drive. Nice and quiet. BUT! it's a bit expensive compared to the rest.

Get a Plextor Ultra Plex 40, and a Pioneer 305s Slot loaded DVD-ROM.

Plextor = $100
Pioneer = $100
SCSI card w/o BIOS = $25

That's what I have running in mine, and it's screaming fast!

The sony I have is noisey and takes about a week and a half to spin up which equals bad lag.

IMO, I'd also vote for the LiteOn 16x DVD or an ASUS 52x CD-Rom drive.

I'd say that the Pioneer tray-loading 16X ATAPI DVD drive is most excellent. It's the best one, IMO.

I find the Liteon 16X DVD a noisy drive when it starts the spinup process. I have an Afrey 52X CDROM in this box (only 27.00) and performs extremely well. Of course I also have the famed 16X Pioneer DVDROM.

Agree with John on 3 choices:
1. PIONEER 106S - Cool slot loading DVD drive
2. Lite-On 16x DVD LTD-16301 - your choice if you want to save a few bucks but get decent DVD drive
3. Afrey 52X CDROM - nice CDROM - you save a few $$$

I hear Pioneer slot DVD-rom is as noisy as or noisier than Lite-on ones. And yes slotsare pretty cool
Some people suggested that sony DVD-roms are quieter than its competitors mainly due to its rubber feet and all.
And it's also smaller than others so it would help if you have narrow case with standoffs blocking the way.
And Lite-on is coming out with a newish model (LTF-165) so you might want to look into that. Lite-on ones are very good performer.
And samsung 16xis pretty decent performer.. well I can't make up my mind
