Aside from food, what is the best hand/home made present you have ever received?

This year, I made my friends hand made Christmas ornaments. Sparkly ones with photobooth pictures of us from various places pasted onto them.

Last year, I made everyone a little personalized painting.

One of the best gifts I ever received was a personalized photo album created online and mailed to me with tons of memorable photos and funny captions.

Mrs B., Not a fair question for those of us with kids. Everything from them is "the best." The concrete hand prints are on the top.

My wife made me a scape book of my life, she got all these photo's from when I was little, and contacted old friends and they hand wrote a bunch of letters. Really awesome gift!

A large Ivory Tooth with a Scrimshaw scene with his sailboat and lighthouse ect, mounted on some kind of exotic hardwood base. Awesome, made for me by my Dad about 5 years ago, a real treasure.

Yeah, anything my girls have made me is 'the best'. It really is the thought behind the gift that makes them so awesome. With kids its easy to feel under appreciated, so we accept that. These type of gifts let us know we are not.

A friend of the family gave me a ceramic clock and oil painting that my grandmother had made and given to her before she died. That was really personal, and really appreciated.

On another note, you shouldn't exclude food as gifts here. I've given some damn good homemade food items as gifts before..

I made my dad a desk, but I honestly don't thing anybody has made me something...other than a purchased picture frame with pictures or something like that.

A friend once made me a beautiful candle with pressed flowers decorating the outside, kinda like this but much prettier. It always made me think of her, I kept it a long time.

Aside from food? :hmm:

Maybe the little "hand in plaster" gifts that the kids brought home from school at X-Mas.

Otherwise...my grandmother's home-made divinity candy.

My Mom without fail has given me a new DVD with home videos she's been working on for nearly 10 years. She started with her and my Dad's childhood and has been going through the years and decades from there. Each DVD will usually consist of a 5 to 10 year stretch of videos or pics.

I hate to admit it but I cannot stand watching them though.

She is so very sentimental but I am not at this point.

I'm sure when I'm her age I'll get all teary eyed watching old videos of my son from this time period.

Beyond that I really cannot even think of anything else that was made by someone and given to me for Christmas.

I think the closest I can even think of in recent times even seeing something personalized was last year when I got my wife a iPod Nano with a saying that means a lot to her engraved on it as a complete surprise. Nearly made her cry.

1) My grandmother went through all of her old photos and made photo albums for each of me and my brothers, including pictures from our birth all the way up to the present. She was actually worried that we wouldn't think much of it, but we basically spent all day looking at them. This was years ago, and the photo album is still one of the most prominent books in my house.

2) My father was an excellent watercolor painter in his youth, but gave it up as he aged when work and family didn't allow him the time to continue. I was about 13 and casually mentioned that he should start painting again. That Christmas he gave me a framed painting that he had started just for me after I had said that to him. To this day it is my most prized possession. (EDIT: And my father began painting again regularly)

3) Not one that I received, but that I made. My mother's grandmother passed away, which she took very hard. She inherited a very ornate porcelain doll that is a family heirloom. She lamented the fact that she could not find a display case that was a suitable size for this odd-shaped doll. So I spent months meticulously creating a proper display case and gave it to her on mother's day.

Good thread - fun memories.
