Depends how much money you have to spend! In general you can get more bang for you buck out of headphones than speakers. The Stereophile recommended Grado SR-60 (or it's newer version SR-60i) is only about $80 and is wonderful. I also like the Koss KSC-75 at $20. There are also others, but I do not have experience with any of them. I don't bother since $20 and $80 I spent I've been satisfied with for the past 15+ years.

With speakers, to equal or better the sound of the SR-60 makes you'll need to spend about $800 or more on amp + speakers. The problem with recommending speakers to people is the same problem as recommending food. I'm partial to NHT. I have the NHT SuperOne ($150) from 2001 and those speakers didn't liven up until I added a $600 Emotiva amplifier.

Compared to headphones, speakers are not worth spending much money on unless it is part of your home theater. And with how music is being listened to these days on portable handheld devices, headphones are far more 'useful.'

The only correct answer is that there is no best. There are good and great options at various price levels but from person to person the sound preference will vary. So an option that rates highly in every test and every category might only be so-so to someone actually listening to them.

Really the only thing we can do is ask what your budget is, what you intend to use them for (music including what genre, games, movies etc) and then recommend some options to look into.

Sound is a very personal thing and what sounds perfect to me may not sound perfect to you.

For my money, the Audeze LCD-X is the current "best" headphone. At $1700 it falls well outside what most people would consider spending on a set though.

Stepping down from there is the HifiMan HE-500 for around $800, they are being replaced soon by the HE-560 and those seem like real winners in that price point.

For the lower price segment the Sennheiser HD650 is amazing for $350 ($500 MRSP but easy enough to find for $350). It has a real magical quality to it and is the only set I regret selling off.

You need to set a budget and stick to it, in any hobby "the best" can cost dozens of times what "close to the best" costs.

1. Find white van.
2. You can't because they find you.
3. Win.

 I remember those days. I got approached 3 times! 3rd time was with a friend and the guy remembered me. He was very friendly though and knew right away that I wouldn't let my friend buy one.

I think something to consider is the technology of the drivers, as this plays a very large roll in the performance of the speaker/headphone. Electrostatic, and planar drivers are able to recreate waveforms much more accurately than other drivers due to mass. That being said, they also have problems moving a lot of air for the same exact reason (they don't have a lot of mass, so pushing against the air can be difficult for them). This makes them very good for headphones since you do not need to fill a room with sound. They can be very good for speakers, but you need a lot of those drivers and a lot of power behind them to push the air.

Since you are talking about computer parts OP, I imagine you are referring to speakers that are of a proper size to be used for a desktop setup.

Imagine the best speakers you can reasonably fit for a desktop setup would be the Raidho D1s. A cool $28,500 for a pair of standmount monitors with diamond woofers and ribbon tweeters. Get yourself a nice DEQX digital crossover for around $5,000 (I think they have slopes that go up to 10,000db/octave now), and a nice compact ICEPower 1000ASP amp for around $2000-3000 for power--most companies just rebadge them and put them in a nice box.

Of course the truly rich buy custom speakers like stuff from Goldmund.

Money no object for me would be:

B&W 802D
Classe Delta 600w monoblock amps

Then blow the rest of cash on a proper listening room soundproofed like a bunker.

Not sure about best speakers - there are so many and also their performance is hugely dependant on your room acoustics, so what is great in a small room might not be so great in a large room, and vice-versa. For headphones the question is easier, and I'm saving for a pair of the beautiful Sennheiser HD800's

Speakers are VERY SUBJECTIVE. I like Klipsch Heritage. I have upgraded my Quartets, and Academy. I only have SS25's for the rear, but one day I will either upgrade to larger mains or go to SS10's in the rear.

Even without a sub I had good bass output. I have an Emotiva Ultra 12 now and it rocks.

My dad and quite a few other friends decided to go to Chorus, Quartets, and the like.
