These are probably the "best"

Single Core:
Opteron 144/146

Dual Core:
Athlon X2 3800+ Manchester (2006 model)
Opteron 165/170

If money is no problem and you have phase change cooling and want to hit 4+ GHz
Athlon FX55/57/60 (with unlocked multi you can go really high)

Though these are what are considered to be the "best", pretty much all new S939 AMD desktop processors will break 2.4 GHz on a decent board. Even the 1.8 GHz 3000+ can do it without too much difficulty.

Well, that's the shady part. You don't know what you will get if you buy it from Newegg or Monarch, so if you really wanted one you could get one off eBay if the seller posts pics of its manufacture date
The 2006 Manchester X2s will OC very high on air cooling and low volts; on XtremeSystems' (not sure if thats the site) OC database, the 3800+ 06 models are routinely doing more than 2.7 GHz on under 1.5V.
With a good cooler (i.e. XP120 or Ninja),some luck, and a good board, you should hit 2.8 or even more on a 2006 3800+.

yup, extremesystems.org is a good place to check out. a few of them have hit the 4 GHz with FX series chips. and agree totally with the suggestions.

if you buy a 3800+ manchester right now, you WILL get a 060X processor. X = 1-9.

newegg, zzf, monarch, mwave are all major distributors that move through stock quickly.

seemsl ike the 3800+ manchester are doing 2.8 to 3.0 on air.

the newer CACJE opterons (single core) are also good as well.

the dualcore opteron to get was the ccbwe 0550vpmw or ccb1e 0550vpmw but these are almost impossible to find these days. the 0550upmw seem to be good as well but not as consistent as the vpmw.

Check out Flickerdown, Dave will probably be able to help you and you'll be able to know which stepping you're getting.

Tankguyz will tell you the stepping before you decide to buy too.

Here's an '06 X2 3800 at tankguys.

Just an FYI: If you're after a 144, we'll likely have a sweet deal on them starting tonight

with a 146 and the right stepping i'd say you have an 85% chance at hitting 2.8GHz, with your mobo you'd probably wouldn't have many problems getting a 144 up there too.

144 will probably hit up to 2.8 on air. 146 will hit 3.2 at the top end of air cooling, but 3 GHz is more likely.

Yeah, if you have a good cooler or water cooling. If you don't and want to hit 2.9, go get an TR XP120 or Scythe Ninja with a high-output Panaflo or Delta fan before you start. That way, you can push the voltages >1.6 and still keep the proc from overheating.

There's plenty of examples around here of people hitting between 2.8-3GHz on air.

I imagine if I had my chip running in a lanparty or AN32 it would probably do 3GHz, as it is I can boot into windows upto around 3.1GHz, it's just not stable even at 1.65V.

I'd lean toward the X2 3800+ E4 (2006 ones of course).

Usually cheaper (in Canada at least), & faster at stock if you get a bum OCer.

Hope that the new ones get a ok OC

I'm talking about those guys that go for the SuperPi records that set their HTT lower and set their Multipliers high to get amazing speeds with phase change or liquid nitrongen cooling...I know it's grossly impractical-meant more as a joke than anything, which is why I put the wink in
