I think the most I was ahead in tech, was my dual Opteron 249's on a Tyan S2885 and a LSI 1650 PCI-X SCSI controller card. This was ~2002 and the motherboard was $450, and the CPU's were $750 each.

For rock solid day after day ~ Nothing could touch my EPoX MVP3G-M, K6-2 400, 2x64MB Corsair, ATI Rage 128 32MB and Quantum Fireball 9GB HDD. Literally couldn't break that thing. My favorite gaming rig --- maybe my Abit BH6, Celeron 366@550, TNT2 32MB or my ASrock DUAL-SATA2, 3200+ @ 2.5Ghz, 8800GT, WD Raptor 72GB and 2x512MB Ballistix.

By the way, the dual Abit board... BP6, had a couple of those I donated to the TeAm Beowolf project.

the backup in my sig as been the most reliable. The other one WAS the best performing but the mobo proved to be a failure so it looses for now. I have a P5Q-E on its way so we'll see how that one works.

This....50% OC, the C300a ran as fast as the P2-450mhz, and cost like 30% of it.

That's what everyone said, but in reality the multitasking was far better with a real PII. (Hence the reason I had a PII-300 @ 450, instead of a Celly 300A)

I rode this puppy for over 5 years steadily maxing out the RAM and onboard cache. Skipped over Pentium (though I did snag a used P-Pro system after the Pentium II came out). Added such goodies as a CDROM, SoundBlaster 16, Diamond Stealth 64 VLB, and a sweet Calcomp digitizing tablet.

1GB ram, 60GB HD and a voodoo3 3000 GPU and my 19" Flatscreen Tube

I carried that monster to more Counter-Strike lan parties than I can remember. Sigh.

My last computer, maybe it wasnt that amazing but it was a huge upgrade over the gaming pc's id had before since i could afford to put abit more into it.
AMD 3000+ @2.5Ghz
x850xt (upgraded from an x700 when the x1800's came out and I could afford one)
1gb ddr
DFI-NF4 Ultra (Wish DFI still made awsome cheap boards)
250gb WD sataII 16mb

My Celeron 566MHz overclocked to 850MHz was probably the best system i've owned. I remember how much of a boost i had from overclocking and how much money i saved at the time. I could run any game back then without any problems.

Killed any game at the time at 19" resolutions.

X2 3800+ overclocked to 2.7ghz, 2 gig of ram and a 7800gt gfx card. It was by far the most stable (and picky about memory settings) comp i've used.

Pretty similar here. ASUS P3V4X, PIII Coppermine 700@933Mhz, 1GB RAM (4x256MB PC133), 80GB IDE RAID 0 on a Promise TX2 card (I think it was 80GB?), and Voodoo 3 3000 AGP. That was gaming bliss back in the late 90s. Dual booted Win98SE and Windows 2000.

My current system isn't too shabby either. Q9550@3.0Ghz, 8GB A-DATA DDR2 800, Crossfired Visiontek 4850s. Dual boot WinXP Pro 32bit and Vista Ultimate 64bit.

when i was in college i had an athlon 1 ghz over clocked to 1.1 ghz with a voodoo 5 5500.

i also had an athlon 700 that was solder modded to 1000 slot A with a geforce 2 for a while so either would be right up there (that was around when i joined anandtech at the height of being well an enthusiast gamer haha)

at the time "fast " was a p4 1.4 or an athlon 1.33 .

that might be tied with the athlon 64 3200 + fx5900 I had for a little while 4 years back. I think at the time a 3200+ was the 2nd fastest cpu you could get (below a 3500+)

My socket 939 system was awesome. I had an Abit motherboard that was passively cooled and could run the HyperTransport at about 320MHz before I ran into any stability issues. It started life with a EVGA 6800GS OC PCIE (490/1100) and an Athlon 64 3000+ @ 2.56GHz and 1GB of 400MHz DDR. I then droped a Nvidia 7900GS that overclocked pretty well up to 550/1320. I upgraded the CPU to a nice Opteron 165 dualcore @ 2.7GHz, and added another gig of ram down the road. I got a few years out of that system and a pretty decent upgrade path for the time... too bad AMD stopped making 939 processors or I'd probably still have that one today.

sound card of some sort, don't recall which
