What is the best value vaccum?

The Panasonic upright vacuum that I gave my mom 16 years ago pooped out, and I'm too lazy to repair it (3 belt replacements).

What is an absolutely best vacuum, and relatively lightweight for an older lady to wield?

My mom do not want a robot vacuum.

Thanks all for the input.

if you want commercial quality then get a charlie.

I used one as a hvac mechanic and we dropped one two stories and it survived and is still operating... we used it to suck up fibreglass and its still alive, we used it as a trolley a 140kg ac condensor and its still alive

get your mum the henry or henryetta

they use them in hotels.... more power than a dyson and cost likee 200 (dysons are just flashy for retail market)

Dysons are nice, but i wouldn't call them a good value at their cost. FWIW we got sick of the cheaper bagless and bought a $250 or so hoover bagged one a few years ago. granted, it weighs about 90 lbs, but it's pretty damn sturdy and sucks harder than the second matrix movie.

Cool. Something from England that's supposed to suck.

[edit] and YES I'm joking. Mostly.

0 Torr is a perfect vacuum, but it's hard to get even close to that on a budget.

The Oreck XL is supposed to be top notch. It takes bags though, and it's a bit pricey, but it weighs like 8 lbs and is VERY well reviewed.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money, I recently got a Hoover Windtunnel+Cyclonic for $170 or so. So far, I'm pretty happy with it. My only complaint (so far) is the canister. Unless you empty it frequently, the contents does not simply slide out into the trash.

A related tip:

A good way to breathe new life into a vacuum is to clean the filter!
Our bagless vacuum didn't have much suction, so I took the filter out and HOLY CRAP!
It was jam packed with dirt, dust, hair, etc. I took it outside and banged it against the ground for 5min.
I think the suction increased by about 500%.
The same goes for a ShopVac.

The HEPA filters are expensive to replace (all marketing costs), so just clean your existing one out.

There is a thread at Fatwallet that talks about vacuums in the Hot Deals section. Go there and see what they have now.

CR pimps a Kenmore that is just terrible. It was heavy as hell to push on the stores carpet (no pile at all) and the build quality of the controls was very flimsy.

Vacuums with onboard attachments will be much heavier than ones without. Find a vacuum shop or two by your house and talk to them, they should be able to give you a good idea of what you want and you can test out a bunch of different models.

Why would a mom want a vaccum? I'd get her a present that makes her feel special, not feel like she is made to clean. That's just me though...

As recommended by the fat wallet thread, this vacuum is outstanding:
Hoover Whisper Cyclonic from walmart -link

Rumor has it it uses first gen dyson tech. I bought one for my mom and she loves it - it's very powerful, looks nice, has excellent build quality, and is fairly light weight. It also doesn't grind as much as most cheap vacuums

This. Don't buy a woman a vacuum as a gift.
