get a beginner book, with some fingering excercises etc. learn the chords, practice fingering/scales an hour a day and you'll be set in about a month

I tried doing it on my own and just got frustrated, besides it sounded horrible!

So an hour a day and I can play what I want or will that just be the basics after a month?

Don't just read tabs, you'll be missing out on almost everything.

Its gonna take more than a month, you have to do finger exercises and go through chords over and over again. Its not that fun for awhile, but once you start getting songs down, nothings better.

It helps a lot if you can find someone more experienced to play with you on a semi-regular basis. Having someone who's already got a good basis in rhythm can help you out, plus you can watch them and see if your technique is similar to theirs.
I guess in lieu of that, How to Play Guitar videos could be handy.
If you can get G->C->D down, you're already halfway to being able to play a large number of songs.

depends how hard you practice

don't get frustrated. it might be a good idea to get 4 or 5 beginner lessons. usually after a while, you'll get sick of the lessons, and you'll feel like youre not gaining much from them. thats when you should quit and practice on your own.

That's the easy part. Just wait until you have to play F's.

That's how I did it (back then when I began to play bass guitar), a friend of mine gave me some lessons, I later bought a training book with a CD and borrowed 2 videos from another friend. That's an efficient cheap solution IMHO. Also, I'd look around the web, maybe there's some free sites that give some useful tips for beginners.

Oh, and practice a lot.

I've been wanting to take up leasons also, I saw a place down the road from me that gives leasons, think I'll stop in and see what they're charging. I need to get myself a guitar also I guess.

Get lessons. And, you shouldn't be starting with chords. (but chords are the quickest way to make someone think "I'm getting good")

I hated learning F.

BTW - lessons are a great idea. I never got really good until I started taking them. You learn so much from an experienced player, and it really doesn't get boring. If you feel like you are at your limit with one instructor, just ask them to recommend you someone who will be able to teach you more / different things.

I'm playing for quite a few years now, and I still don't play F the way they teach it. I just barre it.

F is easy, 5th string root barre chords on the otherhand...

I would take a few lessons, practice for a few months on your own, then take another couple of lessons. There is no way to learn guitar but to practice -- a lot.

You still can get a teacher. They are all over the place, and most will take any level of guitarist.

Learn a chord. Then learn another chord. Then learn to go back and forth between them. And learn scales & melodies.

It'll take you a month or so to develop the callouses to get comfortable.

lessons, most people that try to do it on their own never seem to get anywhere. i took 1 year of weekly lessons and that has worked really well for me. if you are serious about it you can do it on your own though.

Ive been playing for about two weeks now, and Im starting to feel like I actually know what Im doing. It finally hit me when my GF tried to pick up the guitar, had no idea what she was doing, and realized that that was what I looked like about two weeks ago.

Right now I can swtich between chords fairly quickly, getting a nice strum, know a few scales, and a few simple songs. Itll come to you quicker than you think.

i learned on my own. picked up a couple tips from friends but i just read alot and played alot. i started out with easy chords so i could get some confidence and it snowballed from there.
