Well, the[EDIT]computer [/EDIT] which I've build for my parents, is much quieter than my current computer. Is there a way, to put something in to the case, that makes it more quiet? Is there any tutorial somewhere?

Thanx

i don't know what kind of system you built for your parents ... but to keep a system quiet - you gotta shut them fans up starting with your cpu fan to your case fans. Find fans that are generally around 20-25 dba ... I've found the silencer fans to be pretty darn quiet at:

www.pcpowerandcooling.com

It also helps to get quiet hard drives - i'm stuck with a noisy Maxtor =(.

The best way to make your case more silent is to get rid of what makes the noise! Some people here seem to drool at fans having 3 or more 120mm fans. Insane! That may be great for cooling but often it's overkill.

Also, I'm noticing most modern cases now have many, many vent holes in the darndest places (under, over, front and backs). All of those holes, while greatly helping keep the innards cool, also add to the noise problem.

I don't see things improving. The P4 is gonna be a b!tch to keep cool. It all adds up to more fan noise. Not good!

If you want a quiet computer then don't ever use Delta black label 38cfm fans to cool your cpu. Those are really f*cking loud.

Oops, edited the wrong post.

Easy - cool & quiet = big (slow moving), high quality fans. Panaflows (120mm)) are quiet, they are 30dba & move 68cfm of air. sitting next to case with two 120's & a 92mm. My keyboard is louder.

As long as you don't have a CPU oc'ed to 2.6 GHz, keep the # of fans to a minimum. Excessive cooling can't hurt, but isn't necessary. Prebuilt computers come w/ a minimum # of fans and they run fine (well if they don't I doubt it's because of heat). I've run my PC with a minimum # of fans and it's been running fine. I have 2 fans in my entire case - the power supply fan (80mm 19.8dB fan) and the CPU fan (same). The hard drive is in an OEM SilentDrive enclosure at the bottom of the case. The hard drive is completely inaudible and the only thing I hear is the power supply fan.

or run some high powered fans with a baybus to regulate their voltage and speed. checkout fanbus.com (cliff's website)

Thanx guys, I have the FOP32-1 installed, and I think it's loud as hell, isn't it? The System for my parents is a Athlon 500 with a Coolermaster cooler

Antec PP303X - has thermal controlled fan
a few 80mm Panaflos - they're rated at 21db.

ndee, I just built a system this weekend and the fop32-1 is indeed loud as hell. I'm going to start looking for alternatives.

1. If you want it quiet...removed the power cord...usually works unless you have a UPS.

2. Heheh...you guys think todays PC's are loud? Imagine ten years or more ago when you had to wear ear plugs to go into the mainframe room (I still have my earplugs =])

Navi,

Comparing a personal computer to a mainframe, noise wise, isn't exactly fair. PCs are like children: they are to be seen but not heard. The only sound I want reaching my ears is from my 5.1 speaker setup. I long for the days of yore when 486 boxes had but one fan: on the power supply. Today I must accept the p/s fan, an intake fan, an exhaust fan, and a cpu fan (and maybe a video card fan).

In ten years I hope to god optical computing takes over because I refuse to compute wearing noise-blocking headphones!

Well you guys must not have a fop38 that is sooooo loud and on top of that there is 3 more case fans in my computer. I cancel it out after a while so sound doesn't bother me.
