I appreciate the consistency thing which is why I referenced it, but why settle for something consistently mediocre or bad when you could possibly eat something good or great.
...
Support small business, eat out at a local restaurant.

Because many small businesses fall into the "mediocre or bad" category.

So then don't go back there either. Just like you wouldn't go back to a mediocre chain restaurant.

Yes, but that's kind of the point. You go to a small mom & pop you are gambling - they may hit it out of the park, or you may end up throwing away half your meal. With a chain you are (generally) guaranteed some level of consistency which is somewhere in the middle.

well, that's what I was saying. When you are visiting some unknown town, you can't really know if those small places are shit or not. Your risk of disappointment is far greater there when comparing to a known quantity.

But that known quantity is often poor. Just the same poor.

Live a little outside the consumer capitalism brand name bubble.

You'll probably end up enjoying it.

Plus we have things called Yelp. Use them.

It's not poor for the person that actually likes that stuff. I'm only making an argument for the typical consumer and why this model has become so popular. I'm not making a value judgment on taste for one place to another. That person actually prefers to go to a known place like Cheesecake Factory because they actually like it.

Yup. Very clearly places like Cheesecake Factory and BJ's appeals to a certain segment of the population. The proof is in their massive restaurant sizes and ability to pack said massive restaurants to the gills on weekend nights.

I think in general I am flummoxed by the popularity of pretty must most large sit-down chain restaurants out there. They generally all suck. There is a tipping point at where you have too many restaurants and have to sacrifice quality for consistency, and then you fuck it all up. It's probably easier in fast casual places. I mean shake shack has it down pat and they have a number of locations. I like Jersey Mike's subs also, but have only been to three of their joints. Even though Shake Shack is better, I always had a good experience at an In n Out when I traveled to the west coast.

Once in a while I guess you may crave crap. I still have a soft spot in my heart every few months for a few soft taco supremes at Taco Bell. But around me to go to a sit down restaurant there are too many other options than to go to a TGIF, Olive Garden, Cheesecake Factory, Outback, Red Lobster or what have you. I haven't been to one of those in many many years, except once or twice when a date out in the burbs requested we meet at one of those places. For drinks, not dinner.

Having 18 billion menu items doesn't help either. Your staff has to be competent at making items that they might make once or less in a day. No great restaurant is going to have so many items.

who needs to be competent at making stuff? just boil water, take the bag you get from the central commissary or sysco truck, heat that shit up, pour it into a bowl, and sprinkle some parsley on top. viola, dinner is served.

I guess that's why I never eat in these places unless there are no other options.

Generally we get Japanese or go someplace with a decent burger for a quick meal. For a better meal I'm a snob, last time we went to Cheesecake Factory was in Honolulu with a very picky eater.

I don't think I've seen a more food snobby place than ATOT lol.

Cheesecake has its place. Compared to other similarly priced places, it's not bad at all. As was said by others, it's a good place to take a crowd if people are all wanting different things.

Maybe some of you are ...well...just hard to please. When I go out of town, I purposely avoid chain places and go for local small mom and pop places. I've rarely been disappointed. It's really funny when I visit my folks and I take them somewhere down the road from them that they've never been and they end up really liking it and going back all the time.

Also, there really is nothing wrong with Cheesecake Factory. The food in my experience has been really good. As with any place they are probably better at some things than others, and also location quality may vary place to place. Where I live there are some really crappy restaurants, but there are also some great ones.

I've been to some 4 and 5 star restaurants and have to say in many cases, they aren't for me. Overpriced, usually more about making the food look pretty than tasty. Not always the case though.

All these chains serve frozen food. Nothing is from scratch anymore. But I still go there once in a while.

Agree with paragraph 1 and 3. Paragraph 2 less so.

Sorry you're saying the whole meal is frozen and they don't prepare anything? I highly doubt that and I'd put even thing their food is really that good but of course they are going to have frozen ingredients, but the whole meal comes pre frozen.

Eat where the locals eat. If you're in an unknown town and there's an empty nice restaurant and a crowded diner, go to the diner. You might not find something astounding, but you're going to find something that keeps people coming back. I'd rather try an unknown burger place than a McDonalds or a mom and pop pizza place instead of pizza hut. All you get with the national chains is guaranteed mediocrity.

It's so easy to find good local places now that I don't go to chains too often for dinner anymore. Even in Japan I was able to find really good places on Yelp or Google maps, and generally if they have good ratings then the food is good. The thing that gets me the most is that places like Cheesecake Factory are not cheap, their meals are still like $15 for just the entree, I mean the food is alright but usually doesn't feel like it's worth it.

I waited tables at a TGI Fridays and there is definitely lots of cooking going on. Had an ex-friend work at Cheesecake Factory, said they did a lot of prep work. I heard Olive garden is the worst for fresh cooked food
