What is the culprit? My CD-RW drive or my CD's? [Update 2: tried at 8x and still unreadable sectors!]

I burend off a massive anime series for a friend that took up 21 cd's. After I gave them to him, he told me that approx 1 ep per cd was corrupted. So i started doing some tests here. At first, i was using EZCD Creator 5. I tried two batches of cd's Memorex and Optimum at multiple speeds (52, 48, 40, and 36). Out of the 4 cd's i made, 3 had episodes unreadable by my other computers.

I then wiped off EZCD and tried Nero 6. The first thing I did was use scandisk on the cd's that had failed. They all had unreadable sectors on it. I then tried buring the same four episodes using nero (at 52x and 36x). Most of those had unreadable sectors on it as well.

Now, do I just have two really bad batches of cd's or is this a problem with my burner (this is a fialry new burner and I haven't sued it until just recently). Do note, however, that all cd's can be read by my main computer (the computer that the disks were burned with) on both the dvd and cd-rw drives on the system.

[update 1]
I burned at 24x (optimum's which say their rated for 40x) and according to nero, one unreadable sector.

Good: 35.97%
Damaged: 63.92% [this is alot higher than the previous disk!]
Unreadable: .11%

[update 2]
Tried at 8x on the optimums. Failed :| The memorex fails at 8x also. Again, the last sector.

Stats:
Good: 54.3%
Damaged: 45.59%
Unreadable: 0.11%

The lasst used sector was the unreadable one in this disk as well as the last disk. And its only 653 mb!! The cd's are 700 mb sized. Grrr.

are the cds you use supporting a hi burn speed? i would try getting a couple blank cd's from somebody and do a test burn with them. you might also try slowing down your burn speed to like 24 or even slower, just to see what happens.

Yep, try lowering the burn to about 24x... if you get a failure or corruption i would assume it is your CD-RW.

The cd (at least teh optimum's say they support 40x burning). I'll try 24x and see how things go.

try one CD at 8x. If you get 100% good, then either change media, or burn at 8x.

i believe your burner is bad. you might try going to the manufacturer website & see if this is a known problem & has a fix. or if you have another pc, try putting the burner in another box & see what happens. sounds like it's your burner, though

It was a verbatim 52x but its being detected as an Asus drive. I'll check the exact model number when I get back home

Try some Fuji (Tanyo Yuden Japan) blanks. Officemax 30 for $2 after rebate this week.

If that doesn't work...outside shout...defrag your HD.

It that doesn't work you probably have a bad CDRW.

What does a fragged hd have to do with anything? Plus, the drive i'm copying the files from is fragged ~2%. Not worth defragging. My drive is an Asus CRW-5224A V1.0

Too fragged HDs can just cause a burner to do bad burns. But it depends on what you're burning and where the program has to go to get the files on your HD. Like I said it's a long shot. OTOH, some burners just don't like certain media. I'm not sure who makes Asus drives but some like Benq and Acer can have trouble with certain media. I've found that most all burners like Fujis so that's why I suggested trying them before you return the drive.
