so mastercard was started in response to visa and then... seems like everywhere that takes visa takes mastercard and vice versa. heck, the window sticker features both logos. chase is the largest shareholder of mastercard, has two seats on visa's board, and is the largest issuer of visas.

weren't they both sued a while back because no one could figure out the difference?

It's like Coke from Burger King and Coke from McDonald's. They are a little bit different, but really they are the same thing.

Perhaps the want to avoid being sued for monopolizing so they have two brands for the same thing.

Umm... American Express... Discover...? The only thing they might have a monoply on (together) is debit cards.

Discover is not very widely accepted. AE is accepted most places, but certainly not all.

Two of my main credit cards are Discover. I've only been to ONE place that it wasn't accepted. In my experience, Amex is actually the least accepted.

There really isn't much of a corporate identity between these two companies in the US, but in a lot of other countries, there are places that only accept one or the other.

Well, what's the difference between one bank and another bank? Isn't this a question about all industries where there are a couple large players that all provide the same basic services?

I can't say for certain whether Amex or Discover is more accepted than the other. However, there are more Amex cards issued out in the US than Discover. Something like 16% for Amex and 4% for Discover. Which sorta tells you which one should be more accepted.
