What is the fastest RAM this IBM will handle?

I have an IBM Netvista (model 8307-47U) in which I am planning to upgrade the RAM to 1GB. The unit has 2 slots which are currently populated with 2 x 256 PC2100. I would like to either upgrade to 2 - 512MB DIMMs or 1- 1GB DIMM (depending on pricing).

Here's the question: The spec sheet for this unit says the unit takes 266MHz RAM, but on IBM's upgrade website they list PC2700 (333MHz) for this unit. Crucial lists PC2100. I assume that it will take faster RAM and just decrease the clock speed down to 266MHz when installed in this unit.
How fast of RAM can this unit handle? Could I purchase 3700 or 4000 for this unit and have it work?

While we're on the topic, what are the current official DDR RAM speeds/models? I have been out of the loop for a bit and always get confused if the RAM I am looking at is the official RAM spec or if it has been OC'd.

If IBM says PC2700. Any speed will work, because you have PC2100 working now. Faster is better.

Any speed? Really? I have a hard time thinking that becuase I have 2100 working now that ANY speed would work just fine. And, if I understand things correctly, I don't think that a mobo with a 266MHz bus will run 333MHz (or above) RAM at its standard clock speed of 333... so I am not sure that faster RAM would actually run any faster than 266MHz whether it is 2100 or 2700. Can someone let me know if this is correct or not? Can RAM run any faster than the system bus (without overclocking the FSB)?

If the spec sheet and crucial say 2100, i'd stick with 2100. You could purchase the higher speed ram and have it work, but it wouldn't run any faster than it can handle. the bios would just slow the ram down to the speed it can handle (generaly).

as far as officialy spec'd, the highest set by jedec is ddr 400. ddr 466 is partialy spec'd - click here for the reference.

Thanks for the input, you make good points. Another thing I have been thinking is that if I am going to upgrade to a GB (especially if it is a 1GB DIMM) it would be good to purchase faster RAM than 2100 and then there is a better chance that the RAM will work with newer mobos if I upgrade in the next year or two. If I purchase 2100 now, it is already on its way out. I just wonder if faster RAM will work in this unit (obviously at 266MHz in this mobo) -- what is the fastest RAM this mobo could handle?

I would go with PC3200 if you have a future upgrade in mind.

According the the product overview, the 8307 series uses the 845G chipset which only supports upto PC2100.
