My current box is a POS--very laggy. I want to go into a local office and exchange it but i was hoping somebody could point me towards the right direction in finding out what the latest/best box to request.

Depends on your area, though most TWC customers have scientific atlanta boxes. Just google the latest SA DVR, probably the 8240.

I think we have the 8300. It takes about 15 to 30 second to change the channel. The only way to surf is by scrolling through the guide. Is the 8420 quicker or is this a software issue?

I can't remember what model we had but it was a SA HD-DVR box. It had a glitch with HD channels resetting the resolution when turned off and then back on. TW said it was a software fix but it took them forever to get it out and even then it didn't work right. I gave up and ditched the DVR box and went with straight HD box.

Mine likes to split shows up into two different recordings at random times during the recording, but that's ONLY if it actually starts to record the 2nd part. Can get really frustrating

I live in LA and have a Motorola DCH3416. The thing is very slow and very laggy. I recorded the Lakers game last night and going through commercials was a nightmare...it often would skip to live for no apparent reason.

I have this same problem. ATT U-Verse just opened up in my area. Going to take a look into it.

If they still have the same f'ed up interface, whatever DVR you get is going to suck ass.
I finally had enough of those idiots and switched to direct tv after TWC upgraded (decided they didn't want to pay licensing fees and wrote their own much worse interface) their DVR software and took away the most basic feature of DVR software (keyword search).

I would switch to DirectTV in a heartbeat but my apartment building does not allow satellite tv.

I've never had that problem. Channel switching is pretty damn fast for me.

You can't get a SA box then. Moto has the 6416, but I don't know if it would make a deifference for you.

Do you have a patio which would have a view of the satellites? If so then your landlord cannot legally prevent you from installing one on your patio.

If that time is accurate then something is wrong. 8300s arn't that bad IIRC.

Go to menu > setup > guide setup

Make sure "Channel Tuning Behavior" is set to auto tune.

Scratch this. Just came back to me.

In the settings, check out your output resolution setup.

480i
480p
720p
1080i

Those should all be listed, but if you have more then 1 or 2 with a dot next to them (IE Selected) then this will cause slow channel surfing. Since you have a 8300 I assume you have an HD tv? I would personally only select 1080i, if you want to for "safety" then select 480p. The 480p "safety" selection is not needed.

If you have all of those selected or really more then 1, each time you change the channel, the box is going through all those resolutions and then picking which one it thinks is best. This will ALWAYS cause a delay in channel surfing.

So check it out, and choose 1080i only.

I'm not at home, so I can't tell you exactly what box we have but it is an SA box. When we first got HD-DVR, the interface worked pretty well. It's wasn't lightning fast but it was perfectly fine. However, it recently just broke so we got what appeared to be the exact same box on the outside but now it had a cable card slot in the back and the previous one didn't. Now the interface is very laggy like you said and it's really annoying.

You can thank the FCC for that.
