Neither of them are going to do well and both will have price drops fairly quick. That is how I see it playing out.

I really feel like MS doesn't care. Provided they are accurate with Series X demand they won't be cutting the price any time soon. If the Series S doesn't sell then MS has a problem.

I wonder if the series S was like a plan B. And after how things started to play out they decided to make the play.

I just don't understand the point of putting out a console that is basically a tweener when you want to compete with the PS5. Or maybe they don't want to compete with PS5 and are taking the Nintendo Switch route where they pretty much flat out said they aren't competing with PS4/X1. And they are sitting fantastically with the Switch right now.

That MS was doing two consoles was rumored for a long time. I think they were initially afraid they were making the console too expensive.

Not trying to be a troll.
Assuming games for either system are like the previous systems.
Zero, I won’t pay anything.
Console games during PS3 and beyond became very shooter(ish) or very childish or very easy.
There were a few games for the PS 3 that interested me but they turned out to be crap.
The need for a decent blue ray system has vanished too.
I really would need to wait to see what kind of games become available for either console.

This is just flat out false.

Sure there were FPS games that were popular, but that has nothing to do with the thousand+ non shooters that are out there on PS3 as well. I have had PS4, X1, and Switch since launch and I don't even own an FPS.

I know and I do not want to sound like a troll.
PS3 and beyond games in my opinion became easier, quicker and less interesting.
I can totally get how someone could have a different opinion.
I’m just saying without actually reading reviews of console games I am not buying one because as of now it has zero value to me.

Again, it's just flat out false. You probably just pay attention to mainstream AAA games that you see commercials for though. If that is the case then I could see where you are coming from. But there are tons of challenging games out there especially on the indie side of things, and the price of those games are also cheaper.

Yeah I stopped following console games shortly post my PS3 purchase. Game after game was a major let down.
That’s where I’m at. I can spend a few hundred on something when the previous version was barely used and more importantly made me sad or wait till I hear “hey this new game is great” or “hey this new feature makes playing with friends better because”

Mostly building survival kind of games
7 days to die, Conan Exiles, Empyrion
I like grand strategy games like any Civ
I haven’t had much luck with shooters, as above they are typically too fast and too small. I like bigger maps shooters like BF2, I really liked Heroes and Generals until they made it more like COD and less like BF2
Recently I have fallen in love with Rimworld.

Pretty much none of those titles would work well on a console anyway lol. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s what it is.

Aside from battlefield I don’t think the type of games you are interested in do well on a console from both a technical standpoint(maybe not so much now with the new hardware) and a control standpoint. A controller in a strategy game just isn’t as good. It’s proven that aside from fight sticks, requiring a special controller for a game isn’t a winning proposition on consoles. Even if they supported keyboard and mouse for those games I don’t think it would do well. Many gamers don’t want the pc style experience to begin with. There is really nothing wrong with that, it’s just what the market has shown over the years.

Yeah that’s pretty much my point.
In the past my wife & I had tons of fun with diablo for PS1(?), some of the platform games. We really liked one that required cooperation like rowing a boat, we like the final fantasy kind of games for the PS1 and PS2. There was one with an enormous fishing mini game that was tons of fun.
Just feels that games like these are gone or excessively childish.
I’m not against getting one of the next gen consoles but I’m not buying one without a purpose other than hoping something we want comes out for it.

Childish? Nah...tons of very adult content (not talking about violence and sex but complex themes like love and betrayal and politics and inner turmoil). Diablo 3 on console was IMO better than the pc when it released due to having a new dodge mechanic mapped to the shoulder buttons. Made playing as melee characters a lot more rewarding. There are also a ton of games with mini games attached but I would never buy a game based on that alone.

Anyway I have no idea where I’m going but I don’t think the games you want are going to be available or any good on a console.

Serious question - have you heard of God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, or The Last of Us 2 on PS4? You mention childish and these are like 3 of the top games on PS4 and they are all adult oriented. Then you got all these indie games including Blasphemous or Dead Cells, that I believe is on all 3 consoles. Go look up a trailer of Blasphemous and let me know how childish that game looks. It just seems like you are completely uninformed of what you are talking about. Again, not trying to be a dick but you just are not very informed of the library based on your comments.

And I do agree with @cmdrdredd that the genres you are into simply do not translate well onto console. It's the same reason I stopped gaming on PC because the games I enjoy now translate better to console than PC. I used to love Starcraft, Diablo, and FPS games which are superior on PC control wise, but am just not into those anymore.

I wasn’t clear, I meant the platformer games like run and jump plus do something fun.

I voted $300, but I really mean $200.

I would rarely buy a launch console. I've been burned by the Xbox 360 - not letting that happen again.

Also, Nintendo usually comes out with an improved console about 2 years later. And, Sony with their slimmer or bundled consoles.

1st wave next gen is not my cup of tea.

I was all set to buy the XBox Series X at launch for up to $500 and now I could care less. I'm waiting for Halo Infinite to come out and then upgrade from my ps4 and now I might even get the Series S as I play in front of a 27" 1440P monitor so have zero need for 4K. I just want Halo and the next Battlefield to do 1440P at 60fps on whatever I get. Which is good because this winter is going to be tight due to covid.

I put in a Series X pre-order a while back even though I wasn't expecting to go through with it.

If I do keep my pre-order, I'll have a large backlog of possibilities, since I've never bought an Xbox of any generation before. Any must plays (excluding games that came to PC)?

Most games came to PC...

The Touryst
Sunset Overdrive
Gears (all are decent, but 1 and 2 are best, 4 is meh, 3 & 5 are equally good to me), campaign only, I don't get the MP (horde modes are OK)
Forza (if you strictly like racing motorsport games are better, but if you are not that into racing horizon series is better)
Halo (1-3 are best)
Ori (both are excellent)
Fable
Red Dead Redemption 1 if you never played it (it has been enhanced on Xbox)
Cuphead

Some games that got poor reviews, but I enjoyed (each of these games I can see being labeled crap, personal preference):
Recore - was released half finished, pretty good now
Crackdown 3 - just fun to blow stuff up, absolutely doesn't live up to the hype we got for it though
State of Decay 2 (play 1 game standard to get the idea then dreadzone mode only, normal is too easy, at least for me) - most of the poor reviews are from the buggy release and lousy multiplayer, but I can see why some won't like the gameplay loop

Sea of Thieves (some people really like it, I don't get it)

I guess everyone sees value differently. Right, now is the cheapest you will ever buy an Xbox Series IMO. At least, in relation to actual cost compared to other technology on the market.

You can't build a PC that competes with the XSX for $500. You will need to spend at least $500 alone on a GPU and then probably another $500 on the rest of the components.

Next year that may not be the case as new faster Ryzens are already being launched soon. And the same can be said for the other components.

Neither way is really right, it just depends on your mindset, but I'd definitely argue that if you're gonna take the leap now is probably the time do it.

$500 for a PS5, if it's more than that I have no problem waiting for a price drop or sale.

Though even if it is within my price range, if the only big title they have for the first 6 months is Spider-Man, I'll wait anyway.
