I would rather that the car is used to save money.

I know next to nothing about cars but I want to get a driving job.

How much is expected?

step 1) don't drive for uber or lyft
step 2) ...
step 3) profit

don't work for businesses that actively exploit regulatory loopholes in order to minimize how much they pay you.

edit: you're either an independent contractor and able to set your own rates and schedules without penalty, or you're an employee who is entitled to certain benefits under the law (health care, mileage reimbursement, and a set wage). Uber/Lyft can't have it both ways as it suits them.

Some people may not have a realistic choice in the matter, whether through circumstances out of their control or from their own past behavior.

Generally, a Toyota with a good service history would do well as a workhorse for "professional" driving. Once you start driving around, you'll start wearing the parts out much faster. Starters are one such part, the suspension parts are the other. A Prius is often a sensible choice.

4 bangers are preferred due to better gas mileage and easier maintenance.

I would try to get an employed driving job first, such as pizza delivery. Reason is that you're earning wages, and if you're really low income, you can use the data to apply for benefits and get the EITC on your tax return.

indeed. i'm just trying to advocate against what i consider to be abusive employment. as for the car recommendation - hard to go wrong with a prius. if you do a lot of city driving, a chevy bolt/volt (get the battery pack fixed on the bolt) or even a nissan leaf might not be too bad.

this. Uber requires a newer model car, and you also have to pony up for the most expensive full coverage insurance. It's all on you.

Uber will give you about 100 if someone barfs in your car. That's it. The barf will never be cleaned. But other than that, making actual money driving for them is next to impossible. Unless you hope to sleep only 2 hours a day or so.

As long as it less than 12 years old, Uber doesn't seem to be too picky about what you drive.

I'd personally like old Crown Victoria for Taxi work. They're pretty bullet proof.

At least in LA the cost of rideshares has supposedly increased a lot. Is none of that actually going to drivers?
For a car I'd suggest a Prius.

I'd probably look for the cheapest chevy bolt you can find around $12-13k. Yeah yeah batteries fires blah blah but they are starting to roll out new batteries so you can get a higher mileage bolt and a brand new battery. Gas is too expensive.
