My girlfriend actually has a lot more money than I do.

Maybe I can strike a deal with her that I pay for her and we split the expenses for her parents down the middle.

or how about not bring them along at all. you're like a woman, always bringing drama when it can be so easily avoided

I don't like that. That's an implied "fuck you" to dad. Even if they don't get along, it just isn't cool.

Well, he could explain more - "I wish I could afford to fly you both out but unfortunately that's a bit out of my budget this time."

There is no budget. Pops would be pissed at anything less than flying first class and being picked up in a limo. They know the OP is filthy rich.

Maybe... I think it's too much of a headache to deal with at this time. It would be easier/cheaper to visit the parents later in the year. That way you can do family stuff around the house, and not have to worry about money or propriety.

Why is money a concern? He says he has a job where he can do whatever he wants and his family's yacht was on yacht weekly! It really boils down to him just not wanting to spend the coin for dad to come.

Also how is the op's gf family so destitute when she has more money than he does? Does she not help her family out?!?!

"The best present I can think to give your daughter is to make sure her mom is there, so would you let me cover your trip expenses as my gift to her? I know it would mean the world to < gf's name> to have you be part of this trip. Do you think that <dad's name> would mind? I'd love to treat you and <dad's name> out to dinner with her when we get back so that everyone gets a chance to celebrate together as well."

BAM

nailed it.

OP is a douche. "Yeah I'm well off and can do whatever I want." Then goes on to say he can't afford $375. Then says well I can't afford $2000. Come on high roller. $2000? In 2010 $2000 is basically a drop in the bucket and especially for someone so well off. You're so full of sh@t!

$2k is a drop in the bucket these days?

Damn I need a new job...

I exagerrated a little. If I wanted to I could come up with a couple grand easily. And I'm not anywhere near rich. So the wealthy OP should have no problems with that amount. Especially coming from yacht owner family money.

Yea the OP should of just left out I'm so rich, I can do whatever I want BS if he is going to cry about $2k. I'm not rich, but I'm planning on dropping $2k for my parents to visit their home country. Big whoop, I don't even have a yacht, though I do have a kayak. It was featured on the pages of Dick's Sporting Goods circular.

This really does not sound that complicated. Don't make it a big deal like saying "my treat." I think people hate that. Make it subtle. Offer to pay for her mom but not her mom's husband (is this the same as your gf's father?)

What difference does this distinction make?

Because then you're not asking them to accept it as charity, you're asking their daughter to accept it as a gift. It's not offered out of your affection for them, meaning they have some reciprocal obligation of gratitude, but instead out of your affection for their daughter on an occasion when a gift is expected.

Say you're paying as a gift to her, not to them.

Skoorb in his infinite wisdom and common sense has hit the nail on the head. Well done Sir, well done. Probably the best example of social etiquette I've seen on ATOT.

"This is a gift to your daughter". If they don't accept or get offended then that is the parents problem, not the OP. It's like two men fighting over the check at dinner - we invited you to celebrate an occasion as a gift to this occasion.
