What is the most quiet Fan/Heatsink for a 400mhz slot1?

I need to buy a fan/heatsink for a celeron 400 slot 1 CPU.

What is the absolute quietest that I can get that will still do the trick. I will not be overclocking this one, its pretty much just an internet machine for my wife - low maintaince. So heat shouldn't be a big problem. She just isn't going to want a loud humming coming from the machine.

Any advice and links would be appreciated.

Thanks gurus,
D

Your best bet would be to use the stock fan if you still have it. Or go to a computer store and get a replacement specifically for the CPU you have.

Otherwise there's onliwon: the Golden Orb HSF, a classic of efficiency. Check this:

A similar model of the Golden Orb, but designed for a FC-PGA CPU, was just reviewed at:

Any of the other HSF's at 2cooltek will too noisy or expensive to make sense.

If you are using a s370 celeron, a really quiet solution was included in the recent Anandtech roundup, the RDJD 715, from the RDJD fan store (online) Check it out! Pcpower&cooling makes really quiet 80mm case fans(silencers), and some of the panaflos are very quiet as well. Be care ful not to restrict either one very much, as the airflow drops off quickly.

If you want absolute silence, then buy a Globalwin VOS-32 and remove the Fans. I've done this on a PIII-550 for a home office setup for a friend, and it works perfectly with just the PS supply fan (if a little warm - and don't even think about overclocking it). Some of the Globalwin units (the FDP-32 and VOS-32 for example) were designed to be used as passive heatsinks anyway...

Since the Celerons may run a little warmer than the PIIIs, you could probably get away with the VOS-32 and a front-of-case fan - one of the Panaflos or a standard 80mm rigged to run at 7v - virtually silent.

The Golden Orb and the RDJD will not fit on a slot one celeron without major jury-rigging. However, I am not sure if the VOS-32 will mount on a celeron - do the PIII's and slot one celerons use the same mounting holes anyone?

hope this is helpful

Thanks to everyone that posted, there is some very useful information.

If anyone has another thought on the matter, please post your thoughts and/or links.

If I understood you Tweakr, I would then just have a heat sink on the cpu, and rely on internal case fans to cool things off?

Thats an interesting idea, I never would have thought of that one. You say you don't have any problems with the heat? Sounds very quiet if proven reliable. A good idea. Anyone else try this?

Thanks to all, I really appreciate the advice.

dwn,

Yes - the VOS32 is basically a large passive heatsink with two (usually YS-tech) 60mm high power fans on it. If you remove the fans, it will still be able to handle the power output of a non-overclocked Celeron 400 easily. Have a look at the following link, and scroll down to VOS32

http://www.globalwin.com.tw/product/slot.html

As you can see, the heatsink is very large indeed, and I'm still not sure if it can be mounted on a slot one celeron.....

The best way to setup this kind of thing would be to have either a front fan blowing in, and the powersupply out, or have the power supply fan and a fan below the powersupply, also blowing out. Assuming you have adequate ventilation in the front of the case, this would keep enough air flowing over the heatsink...Also, you would want to make sure that all the IDE cables and power cables were tied back, to allow air to flow up towards the CPU.

The setup I made has just the PS fan, and with the PIII at default speed/voltage it runs just fine...

glad to be of help

The Global Win FAB28 is a good quiet heatsink that is specifically made for slot1 Celerons. With the case closed you should not even be able to hear it. They are fairly inexpensive too.

A big heatsink a will work if you are not overclocking. I know of Celeron 400's that didin't even come with fans.
